I think you'll find that that reply was to someone asking if they moved to a cheaper tariff NOW, would the fees apply.

I read it as yes they would apply if you didn't move before 9/3.

Happy to be proved wrong of course, but ... pointless to apply exit fees that only apply for new customers because they won't be getting any new customers, lets face it.

I think you are incorrect actually... My contract started in August 2018 with no exit fees as part of the deal. The tweet I quoted confirms that.

I was just about to switch from EDF (Their insistence on a Smart Meter for continued supply of reasonably priced energy putting me off) to Tonik and then I discovered this thread.

It doesn’t look too good, now I will have to start all over again.

EDF prices are competitive and I have always found their customer services very good, however, I just don’t want a Smart Meter with all the attendant issues that frequently crop up on this site.

You should consider the issues with small suppliers versus having to install a Smart Meter with a large supplier. As far as I can see the openning up of the market to tom ,!!!!!! and harry has failed dismally.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.
  • The worst energy company I've ever experienced. My account balance is soaring, I'm paying way more than I ever have.
The company stopped responding some months ago. They no longer send email reminders for meter readings, They no longer send emails when by bill is ready.
They ignore emails completely, but when I posted a negative review on TrustPilot, they magically appeared! Still no response though.
Truly awful and I suspect either fraudulent activity or they're about to go bust.
The last time I use Cheap Energy Club too.

The company's liabilities exceeded assets by a mere £24.8M (yes million) according to their latest published accounts made up to 31 March 2019 (filed last month). Since then 2 directors have resigned and they continue to advertise for new business!! If that's not fraudulent activity I wonder what is.
It would be interesting to know how much of the £24.8M relates to customer credit balances!
The five star Trustpilot ratings are truly amazing and as you say they always appear to follow the one star negative reviews quite quickly in order to bury them!

I realise Martin Lewis does not endorse these providers he nonetheless encourages people to switch to these less well-known groups in the belief that significant savings can be achieved. Therefore, when issues become apparent, as is the case here, he should flag this up on this site so potential switchers can then make an informed choice.

Away from the rant, has anyone got anything positive to say about Smart Meters should I decide to stay with EDF. Are they any better/worse than other suppliers in terms of issues with their installed base of meters?

Martin or Which should be asking Tonik Energy to explain !!!!!! is going on. We, the customers don't get any answers. They are 'in transition' and soon, shortly or some other vague term is supposed to reassure us.

I was planning on switching to another supplier as soon as I got an up to date statement. I now have an additional problem. My last meter reading was lower than the previous one. Because it's a clocks meter I take a photo of it each month so I can study it after getting up from my knees at the low cupboard where the meter is located. The photos show the meter recorded a lower reading in March than February or else all my previous readings were wrong. Tonik say it's going backwards and are going to replace it in a couple of weeks. I think the new one will be a smart meter. I will have to agree a closing figure for the old meter. I now feel I should scrutinise the readings for the past year more closely as the meter is very old and may have gone wrong before. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just had an email from Tonik..their staff are now working from home, because of the Corona virus and to bear with them in these difficult times.

Most of the messages like this are signed by the CEO. The Tonik Energy one is signed: The Tonic Team.

But the avalanche of 5 star customer feedback ratings on TrustPilot continues unhindered. Four published in the last two hours. Truly amazing!!
