  • I LOVE my hot water bottles, honestly I spend more time with hot water bottles than my husband (too far??). I pretty much always have one on me at home, I'm sat with one right now :) then it comes to bed with me. I also have one at work (for sore bits the morning after exercise, days the heating doesn't come in but it's snowing outside, and recovery from working outdoors early in the morning). I got one from the Works for £5 and it's circular to go round your neck. I love it, but you have to be careful filling it up as it can create an air bubble and spit hot water at you :/ the cover is ugly so a whipping up a new one is on my to-do list.

Hooray for the common hot water bottle :)

That's an extreme amount if you are out all day!! What sort of heating do you have? Where I lived until recently, I paid £40 pm for both gas and electric with gas central heating, admittedly used sparingly, as I'm on a very tight budget..hence lots of layers, woolly hats, thick duvet, fleece covers and my HOT WATER BOTTLES :D

I know, it's huge isn't it. Im devastated. I have electricity just. I leave the house at 5.30am so don't turn any heating on then, am back in the evening around 7ish so turn on the heating in living room/bedroom depending on where I am. Never in the kitchen/bathrooms etc. Don't have anything on while I am out of the house in the day as I am trying to be as careful as possible, as also on a very tight budget. £81 a month seems insane for a 1 bed flat but the energy club here says it's the cheapest and energy company say that's what my DD must be from now on... so embracing the chill!

Sorry to hear about your horrendous DD. I refuse point blank to have a DD, and just get a bill every month. To keep it in check I read my own meters and ring in my readings. They don't like it, but it means I pay for what I use and no more.

Have you thought of investing in a calor gas heater (ie with bottled gas) which I'm sure would cut you electric bills? They are very effective but it's important to vent the room due to the fumes then give off and also the condensation they create..also best to have a carbon monoxide alarm.

One on wheels can be moved from living room to bedroom as required and I find them very effective for instant heat in the evenings and would seem ideal for you as you aren't at home very often and much much cheaper to run.

  • I have been hugging a lovely hot water bottle since about 2.30 when I felt very cold but didn't want to light the stove yet.....seems like hot water bottles really do the trick because in 10 minutes I was toasty warm and still am!

OH was moaning about cold feet last night - mine are always cold so I sit with my feet up on the sofa and am wrapped in a fleece, but this is new for him.
Time to look in the airing cupboard as I am sure I bought a HWB or two after a chilli camping trip a few years ago.

  • I have them but use them "medicinally". Any tummy ache, backache, stiff neck, period pain and out comes the hot water bottle. Nothing works better I find, not even pills.

Same here. Also when been to the dentist and the numbing stuff is wearing off, cannot abide the cold tingly feeling - a hot water bottle sorts it out. Have always turned to hot water in times of pain, during labour I could mostly be found in a hot bath

I have an electric blanket that you can lie on and I set it to hot before I get in, and turn it down to warm while Im reading, then off at sleep time.
I used to always have a hot water bottle in bed, but only the kids have them now as I have the blanket. My DH hates things like hot water bottles, slippers and dressing gowns but seems to like the hot blanket!

My last quarterly (metered) bill for both gas and elec was just under £120 with British Gas (2 bed house; I don't have the heating on much but like a weekly bubble bath). I pay by cheque so presumably not on the cheapest deal, but when I hear about these random Direct Debit amounts I'm not so sure. I don't pay anything by DD as I like to check the amount is correct before I hand over my cash.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
  • I broke my hot water bottle this morning!!! The stopper was stuck so I did what I normally do to undo it and pushed a skewer through the hole in the stopper to use as a lever and there was a ping.....and the bit with the hole in was hanging on the skewer and the stopper was still stuck.....swizz!!!
