...I have seen one of those old fashioned long handled pans that people filled with hot coals (don't know what they're called) but I couldn't help thinking if anyone's bed use to catch fire!

They were know as warming pans.

No idea how the maids filled them and then carried them up lots of stairs without clanging into walls and dropping them, or their contents everywhere.
  • Another user of hot water bottles here. Having had a few DVTs I get very cold in winter. I use them at night, but also if wrapped in a blanket during the day.

I have also been known to stuff one down the front of my jumper / top of my trousers if we are outside in the cold for a while (like on bonfire night). Pulling the thing out in the pub afterwards so that I can sit down always makes everyone laugh!
  • I lived in a rental flat for years that was so draughty it rendered the central heating pointless; the ancient ricketty sash windows just sucked everything out of the radiators. So I got used to living with lots of layers, a woolly hat on indoors, and hottie botties.

Now I have a better insulated house, but I'm basically too tight to turn the heating on much, so live in the same way.

One of my bottles has a cover that must be 30 years old as I had it as a small child; it's a fluffy bunny in a red pinafore. I defy anyone to have a hwb that's even less cool.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
  • I love my HWB! I pop it in to warm up the bottom of the bed before getting in and snuggling it tight...usually need to fight the dog for it tho lol
I also have one in the evenings watching tv or reading, under the blanket with a HWB saves sticking on the heating when it's chilly!
    Emergency Savings #73 = £1,500/£2,000
    Savings Pot £1,440.00
    Xmas 2018=£100/£300 Australia =£0.00/6000
  • I use a hot water bottle. I put it in the middle of the bit of bed I sleep on about 30 minutes before I'm due to get in it, then I push it down to the end of the bed to keep my feet warm. I usually empty it in the morning, but I forgot all about it this morning and almost sat on it when I sat on my bed without even thinking about it, I wouldn't of been a happy bunny if it had burst and soaked my bed! :)

Since receiving an absolutely massive heating bill and having my DD changed from £27 per month to £81 (for one person who works full time and is hardly at home!!)
    :eek::eek::eek:

You need to change your energy supplier! I'm in the same position but paid nothing like what you are, even before I fixed. If you live in a home with just one spare bedroom, I bet you could get away with £60 pm in the winter.

Hope is not a strategy :D...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!
  • i use one for my neck problem (and an icepack) but I like a cold bed to get into.
my eldest sister asked for one and a knitted cover for crimble, while I was buying the Walter online I saw I could get 2 for 1 so dad got one too :D

It's horrendous isn't it... I have no idea why the DD has increased so dramatically as I am hardly ever home. Absolutely terrified to turn the heating on now :(!

I keep searching on the comparison websites but it is telling me I am on the cheapest deal... very frustrating as I will struggle to pay £81 per month solely for electricity.

That's an extreme amount if you are out all day!! What sort of heating do you have? Where I lived until recently, I paid £40 pm for both gas and electric with gas central heating, admittedly used sparingly, as I'm on a very tight budget..hence lots of layers, woolly hats, thick duvet, fleece covers and my HOT WATER BOTTLES :D

Iv'e bought 2 this year but they are really for when we start camping again.

I remember when we were small, the bottles were shaped like animals.
I had a blue dog one year , a pink rabbit another, they often got replaced so I suppose they must have become leaky.
We never had a cover on them and sometimes they were so hot you had to avoid them till they cooled down.
The worst thing was waking up and feeling the cold bottle on your feet in the morning.
