  • Atora veg suet is in most shops next to the original version . I too am still stunned by PNs dumpling mix formula - decades of dumplings and never occurred to me . I think dealing with leftovers depends much on freezer space sometimes . I have a huge chest freezer cheap as chips from Iceland in 2001 when they used to sell them in the stores . Unlike many today it can operate in low temperatures and is my right hand for many reasons . It lives in the garage and hoovers up bulk cooked portions of food , bargains and homegrown herbs and veg , from now on there will also be emergency flour in there after my dumpling disappointment .
Only the second I've needed to buy since the 70s and wouldn't be without it .

Evening all, dumplings are another thing I've not had for many years, used to make them for my grandma had to use the green bowl. Certainly not had them since I moved here so at least five years.

Monday's are my hungry day, I have an evening class which I don't have time to eat before so it's late and I've had an eight mile day before I've had a chance to eat. Which means I'm tired, hungry and not in the mood to cook. So tonight was the last two crumpets with butter, a slice of need cut up and dipped in to mustard/ketchup mix and some HM Greek yoghurt. I was thinking it was a tad too tart so put some berry smush in it which changed it to too sweet, sometimes you can't win! Not sure how much sugar went in with those berries.

Now contemplating a mini roll, picked up a couple of packs in Mr T as they had them half price which is almost reasonable.

    Morning everyone,
Will be interesting to see how many folk have dumplings in the next week or so?:) Possibly me if I cba making a pot of mince to have with them :D
Freezer rake I think tonight unless I do find my mojo and make some mince, probably involving beans and oven chips. I'm having a couple of visitors for lunch tomorrow so the LO root veg mash is going to be converted into some soup to have with a bagel when they come. Son is then home Weds/Thurs so wont be a cooking for one household for a couple of days:)

  • Morning all! :j
Normally a mate is over for dinner on a Tuesday, think it's an excuse to get away from all his Mrs wedding plans!
If he is, it'll be pasta bake or if not, finally the last of my spicy sauce! Though must do some serious tidying before he's over tonight!!

It'll be toast for starters - and the spaghetti hoops. Somehow I forgot about the spaghetti hoops .. and I've half a tin that's been sitting in the fridge since god knows when (Thu or Fri...?) ... and some cheese on top.

I just checked, by searching this thread. I opened them on the 16th, last Thursday.

  • Trouble is, with food, there's simply too much choice and availability these days, so you can't get round to everything.

Oh I don't know about that:rotfl: I'm making it a personal mission to do my best to (within the parameters I've set myself). My eyes are always open for what's new when I'm out food-shopping - and I've tried quite a lot by now:):EasterBun

I can confirm that 5 days after being opened and put into a lidded container in the fridge .... spaghetti hoops don't smell, don't go green - and still taste as lovely as when they were opened :)
  • Useful idea for the day I picked up yesterday. I've been checking out the blog https://eatnotspend.wordpress.com

as she has a few possibles on there for recipes I can try.

Her blog makes rather a difference to other "very economy" ones I read/promptly usually think "yuk" and/or "that's not enough - I'd be left starving after eating that".

Anyways on - and I tried out a roasted cauliflower and couscous recipe yesterday and her method of cooking couscous is to put the couscous in suitable container and top up with boiling water and put a lid on it and just leave that few minutes until it's cooked.

Now I've been boiling water up in a saucepan on my cooker/throwing the couscous in/putting saucepan lid on and turning off the hotplate. It cooks the couscous alright - but very often I've found it boiled over a bit from the residual heat in hotplate and that was a bit of a mess for me to clean up.

So - duh! Why didnt I think of trying it this way? Duh! Duly put my couscous straight into saucepan/poured (measured) boiling water over it from the kettle/lid on and left that same few minutes - without having switched that hotplate on at all. Result = couscous done/no mess.

    My new method then....:o
