I didn't try spicy food really until I was in my 20s, my family brought us up on very plain food and when I was old enough to cook I would always do things of a weekend but during the week I'd get in from work to dinner waiting for me in the microwave, usually something that had just been shoved in the oven with beans. Great as I didn't have to cook but not always what I wanted.
Granted my mum has many many allergies to food and there were 4 kids so I can't really complain.
She taught me how to cook and bake a lot of things just never dumplings!0 -

Or the best apple pie recipe or my shortbread recipe even work colleagues ask for... OK the latter is from my 1980s cookbook but hey!
She taught all of us to cook and my brother has to cook for his Mrs as she was never taught and refuses to learn!0 -

I can't get my pastry as good as my mums IMO but my mates love it when I'm in baking mode around the time they're visiting.
Did one just before Christmas but I did a normal size pie just for me and on day 3 I had apple pie for breakfast, lunch and after dinner just to use it up! Fair to say I'm off of it for a little while!0 -
The fact is, no matter how common/usual anybody thinks any food is - there is simply too much food in the world for all of us to have actually eaten everything
Dumplings were VERY commonplace in my house growing up - and when I got old enough to cook for myself I'd knock up a bowl of them for "supper", which was a late evening scoff-fest. I just made them with an Oxo cube gravy as it was all about the dumplings and nothing else.
I keep meaning to make some suet puds... SC's good for that.
Trouble is, with food, there's simply too much choice and availability these days, so you can't get round to everything.0
