Setting up two routers

I currently have a Sky Hub, not sure of the model number, maybe SR102. I also have a new Huawei HG633 router from TalkTalk.

What I'd like to do is have 2 routers set up. One for all of my devices to connect to, unaltered. And one specifically for my Raspberry Pi to connect to.

Would anyone please be able to help me with this? As it stands I have everything set up and connected to the Sky hub.

Note: I want to access geoblocked content on my Raspberry Pi (Kodi) and have been advised to do so via VPN... hence me wanting two routers!

Unsure you can get this working, but you can make the SR2 into a wifi booster (lan to wifi). You can't have both modems working as two separate modems on one line.
What I'd like to do is have 2 routers set up. One for all of my devices to connect to, unaltered. And one specifically for my Raspberry Pi to connect to.
Think you will have to reserve say the first 50 ip as static and leave the rest dynamic. The second router will have to have its dhcp disabled. Rasberry Pi is assigned to the static ip pool. My router supports this but cheap one may not?
Would anyone please be able to help me with this? As it stands I have everything set up and connected to the Sky hub.
What is wrong with your current setup? why do you want to make it so complex?
Note: I want to access geoblocked content on my Raspberry Pi (Kodi) and have been advised to do so via VPN... hence me wanting two routers!
You will have to but the vpn client on the Pi.

All sounds messy. Unsure why you need two routers.
    (a) simple way is to keep it as it is and just put the vpn client on Pi. If there is an Openvpn client for Pi?
Or (b) Get a router that supports Openvpn and run all your machines of that.
    (c) There is an OpenVPN plugin for Kodi, but never known anyone to use it.

    (d) there is other things you can do as in setting up your own dhcp server to assign ranges, firewalls, and gateways, but it is expensive and over complicated.

You cannot have 2 modem/routers connected to your fibre/copper line at the same time, easiest method is connect the PI as normal and then set it up to connect to your chosen VPN.

Google gives lots of results to set the Pi up

Why do you need two to use a VPN? The VPN access is set up on the computer you want to use it and that computer routes all data through the VPN via your router. Using two routers makes no difference, ultimately the data is still going to travel through your phone line and the IP address assigned to that.

Yes, what you want to do is possible, but not sure if your ISP supplied routers can be configured to do this. Also you will need to sign up with a VPN service provider.

Basically the VPN router will get its local IP address from the principal router connected to your ISP. Any device connected to the VPN router will have it's traffic routed securely across the internet to the VPN service provider.

All other devices on the main router will access the Internet via your local ISP as normal.

Choose your preferred VPN service provider and follow their setup instructions.

If you aren't technically minded there are companies who provide pre-configured routers for the most popular providers i.e. FlashRouters. Suggest you check out their website as explains the options fully.

So is it possible to have the Pi use a VPN whilst other devices connected to the smae router dont access the VPN.

    Thanks.

Yes, As was already mentioned you can set up the Pi to use a VPN independent from anything else going over your connection. Whatever VPN service you choose to use will provide setup instructions although maybe not for a Linux based machine such as the Pi so you may need to do a bit of digging on google.

I have done this with 2 Asus routers (for some reason Asus routers are very configurable and have alternative firmwares for even more configurations). Unfortunately the VPN router went offline frequently and simply had to be rebooted but I found it unworkable.
I have now discovered that an Asus router running Merlin firmware can be configured to route specific devices through a VPN while leaving the rest as 'normal traffic'
    Here is a guide
    https://vpntips.com/vpn-router-install/
The 'Redirect Internet Traffic' option needs to be set to 'Policy Rules' and you can select the various IP's in a new section that appears below.
I also had to use the guide here
    https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/227852327-Setting-up-an-Asus-Router-running-Merlin-Firmware

It seems to be working fine for me now - but it is all a bit of feeling your way in the dark!!
  • I wasn't trying to get the two routers set up independantly - I know that one would have to connect to the other.

The reason I wanted two was because it's a lot easier to switch between VPN and no VPN with my other devices such as PS4 or phone. Simply connect to the other router and you're good to go. This is for when I'm browsing the web on my phone and I come across a video that won't play because I'm outside the US. Or if I want to access US Netflix on my PS4 (but then go back to UK Netflix when I want to).

I don't mind buying another router to be able to do this if anyone has any suggestions for what would work?

I'm open to alternatives too though, I may end up just setting up a VPN on my RasPi and just put up with not being able to watch US Netflix on my PS4.

If it is just for your phone than set up the VPN access on your phone. It will make no difference to the VPN whether your are connected by WiFi or the SIM.

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=VPN+for+phones

If you install a VPN on your home router then it won't help with location swapping - your VPN end point will always be your home network. I think you need to clarify in your own mind just what a VPN is.
  • It's not just for my phone it's for my PS4 as well.
