I would be very distrustful of any 17 year old telling me they were 17! I err on the side of them lying about that and presume under 16, especially if you thinking about dating and being more serious.
  • i accept what you are saying. i am not even sure myself because of the age difference. i understand how a parent would feel, but surely if the friendship did materialise into something more serious and your daughter was happy, would you not at least give the guy a chance to talk with you about the situation before writing him off?

As harsh as it may sound to you but no I wouldn't want to hear his side of the story. I don't think I could get past wondering why a grown adult of 29 would seek a relationship with a 17 year old child.

Other parents might have a different view but mine is very firmly that it's inappropriate.

When does a 17 year old "child" become an adult

    17 years and 364 days = child
    17 years and 365 days = adult?

well no i didn't. we are not together at the moment and i don't believe we'll get back together, the relationship just isn't right for me or us.

if i was in a serious relationship i wouldn't actively pursue anyone else. anyway this isn't a relationship, just a friendship at the moment as i only met the girl 2 days ago.

You sound like a real catch!

I think you need to do some growing up before starting out on any new "friendship". Work out how to relate to women of your own age, not teenagers.

    I agree with this...

If one of my acquintainces in your age group started courting a girl of 17 it would definitely be frowned upon and eyebrows would raise.

However if a 17 year old lad hooked up with some !!!!!! there'd be backslapping all round!

    Tough world isn't it?

not exactly sure what i've said to evoke a response like that.

What strikes me more than the age thing is this...

"i like you, never had someone be interested in me and my life like you are"

Sounds like the girl has very low self-esteem, probably not done too well romantically and may be latching on to the first person who seems to have taken an interest - and interestingly, you say you only took a shine to her after she'd told you that she liked you.

Before you think about relationships or anything else, if you're a nice guy, I'd be sure to make sure she's not vulnerable.
She would always like to say,
Why change the past when you can own this day?

    FWiW, when I was 19 I was dating a 44 yr old. When I was 21 I had a relationship with a 42 yr old-we were together 10 years.
