  • 38.05 and 37.81 miles to add for my last weeks on fitbit.

Lost my fitbit on Monday so I will be down for this week unless I can pick up extra during the week.

(It turned up hidden in my bedroom, where I had took it off for a bath)

Tragically I know the step count of my regular walks. As long as I'm doing the usual stuff, I add it up in my head a deduct 10% so my conscience is clear:o. Only had to do it for three days this year.
  • Okay. Then what kind of comfy shoes do you wear to walk that much? I really want to know because I just got two huge blisters by walking like 4 miles.

What were you wearing? You may just need some thicker socks.

I've been doing 6-8 miles a day for the last couple of months, although I'm not taking part in this 2000 mile challenge. I usually wear New Balance trainers. I chose them because I have very wide feet, and they do width fittings.

I've also imported some wide trainers from the USA, where there's a much bigger choice of wide trainers. I don't think the fit is as good for me, though.

I also did some walking in the Lake District, wearing Altberg boots.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Footware is dependant upon the person. Blisters are caused by something rubbing on the skin and causing damage. However you need to ensure that your shoes/boots are not slipping around and avoid the front of your foot from lifting in the toe box. Also, wearing boots too tight can give you issues! Where are the blisters located?

Double socking can help (although an altberg fitter once told me 1 good pair of thick synthetic/wool sock is all you should need) and reduce the chance of a blister (not stop it though, I can vouch for that!). I have learnt not to use socks with too much cotton content either, use socks with a high % of synthetic fibres or wool. The reason being is cotton holds onto water like its going out of fashion where as synthetic/wool allows it to escape easier. Granted into the boot but I can definitely tell the difference! That is the same for clothing. I wear base layer which is mostly synthetic (its actually a motorcycle base layer from Aldi!) which helps with comfort) and walking trousers which are designed to dry quickly.

It can take some time for a boot/shoe to break in. I know when I get new footwear. When I get new boots it can often take around 50 miles of walking before my footware feel 100% correct and I feel confident on taking on longer walks. Saying that, my Altberg's which were 'fitted' at the shop have never given me much grief other from walk no 1 (although gradually increased miles in them), but saying that doing 2 of the 3 Yorkshire 3 peaks (16 miles ish), I could feel the early warning signs of rubbing.... that reminds me, need to plan to do all 3!!

Hi all, I haven't posted in an age, sometimes life throws things at you that you just have to prioritise and I've been more or less out of action since the start of June. I just did some sums to see where things are.

    Totals to date
    Jan-Mar 500 miles
    Apr-Jun 489 miles
    July 127 miles

My end July total should be 1170 and it's actually 1116, which is actually not as bad as I expected. I'm in two minds about whether to write off July or whether to try to make it up. Watch this space! In the meantime though I just need to start walking more. I also am worried I have the beginning of plantar fascitis (which interestingly seems to have coincided with walking less!) so that may have some impact on the decision too.

Hope you are all doing better than I am.

I have been suffering with plantar fasciitis since Easter. It is getting better slowly but has prevented me from running. I'd get doing the exercises now before it gets too bad

I seem to be keeping up with my 9 mile a day average without really trying.
I will get next weeks numbers off to a flyer tomorrow as I am doing a 10 mile single walk and still have my regular dog walking to do on top of that. By the end of my week I should be well under 100 miles to go :T

I haven't posted on here for a few months but have been keeping up with the walking. My current totals for the year are 1239 miles, 2,840,188 steps and 9824 floors climbed I am just ever so slightly ahead of where I need to be to hit my target. I've just taken on a new contract in work that will leave me working from a customers site one day a week for the foreseeable future and luckily it is closer to home so I will be walking to and from there, it will only be 5-6 extra miles a week walking both ways but it is still better than nothing. I am determined to get to the 10,000 floor mark by the end of this week which should be doable as I always take the stairs everywhere I go and one of my regular dog walks accounts for a huge number each week.
