Because, as is widely known and as has been stated to you on this very forum more than once, Christmas is only very loosely a Christian festival, its roots are older and completely different. The religion doesn't own it, they just own the most current name for it.

Jesus wasn't the founder anyway, that was Paul.

Yes I know that: I was brought up with my gran and dad's Romany beliefs, I probably know more about those roots from first hand experience than your pompous post * demonstrates that you know. Our beliefs caused untold generations of my gran's people to be persecuted for centuries. If you read my post properly, you would see that. Instead, as usual you get up on your soap box and proceed to demonstrate your complete ignorance, with a dash of unwarranted criticism. You are the example of the know - all who knows nothing.

    * - "...as has been stated to you on this very forum more than once.." -Really? How self-important can you get?

I will not be answering, or even reading, any more of your puffed-up nonsense on this Topic, don't bother to answer this.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

We are all for the "walk on the beach" - we do that all the time in winter, if it's a Sunday we wind up with lunch at a great English restaurant, all basic carveries/pies/fish & chips. Then another walk to get rid of excess calories!

Boxing Day will see us at dd and partner's with our granddaughter. The problem there is dd's son, our 22 yo grandson is an Asperger's sufferer with his own apartment and very good job that he loves, but a disinclination to leave the apartment apart from shopping and work. We believe that he is developing a form of Agorophobia, and are all trying to bring him out of it. His useless dad has been gone since he was a toddler, resulting in me being the male figure n his life since then, although over the last few years dd's partner has begun to take some of that load. I will have to practically drag him out of the door for a Christmas meal with us here. Past experience has proved that he is always OK after settling down at ours, it's just the initial reluctance.

I have spent Christmases in Army service in some difficult places and later alone for a period, after my first relationship crumbled to dust. I would not mind my own company, but it is good to be able to turn to someone you love and share something as simple as a comment about a movie or other TV programme. When I was young at home, we did not celebrate Christmas and I am still uncomfortable with it: I am not a Christian, why should I celebrate the birth of the founder of a religion that I have no belief in?

Sorry, you're going to have to point out the bit in your post about the centuries of persecution, I must have missed it...

What time does your son have to set off for work? What I might be tempted to do is go out Christmas eve for a drink if you can find some friends to go with or to midnight mass at Church. Just have a few hours sleep, get up open your presents and have breakfast together and then when he sets off to work, go back to bed. Just throwing it in as a suggestion if you don't fancy any other idea so far. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. He will leave about 10.30am and get back about midnight. He doesn't drink much and won't drink the night before if he's got to drive to work but will probably spend Christmas eve with his gf. I'm going out with friends Christmas eve .

I think it was just the thought of having a Christmassy morning opening presents etc then the day going a bit flat once he's gone. We don't normally spend much time together so it wasn't that I can't cope without him iyswim. I realise I am lucky not to be spending the whole day on my own as some do not have a choice and that I have food and a roof over my head.

I've been on the website and all my local churches are doing morning service and evening service but all the community cafes are closed as I understand they are putting all resources into the big Christmas day meal at the cathedral which does not require further volunteers.

The weather forecast isn't looking great for a Christmas day walk along the seafront - mutterings about possibly storm Barbara (?) on the forecast last night. Fingers crossed it will stay dry.

I've put a few books on my wishlist so hopefully DS will have bought me one of those and I think I will be curling up with a good book and some festive food and drink :)

At no point did I mention taking her son with her!!! I said if you could find a friend to go with for a drink, or go to Church at midnight. Son is an adult. Mum has already opted to spend what he has of Christmas day with him, she doesn't have to spend Christmas eve not doing much either.

I did assume you meant with her son.:o However, if her problem is not seeing her son over Christmas, I'm not sure how seeing even less of him will help.

Thanks, but the poster didn't actually mention that in the post I responded to and that he admonished me for not reading properly, apparently expecting me to pick it up in the ether, or something.

I shall spend a big part of Christmas on my own.

Mornings will be taken up with our grown up children and Grandchildren. Afternoon will be taken up with the Christmas dinner and after that I'll most likely spend the evening upstairs on my pc/watching telly whilst hubby will be watching what he wants to watch downstairs.

    I'm quite happy with that.:)

In all honesty your son chose to work Christmas Day so I'm a bit unclear why you felt you have to be at home for him. Surely if he didn't want to be alone he could have stayed at his girlfriends .
