Welcome to all the new people!
I should say that i was a chef for many years, and I know a lot about food, and what I dont' know I am willing to learn. But this thread isn't about going on WW, SW, atkins, or faddy diets, and all of us on the same thing. This thread is about all of us finding out what works for us, using homecooked and non-processed foods.
I try to give good, sensible advice, you dont have to take it!
About using fake sugar - your body reacts to it the same way it does to sugar. Your body thinks you've just eaten a bunch of sugar, so your insulin levels rise, then drop sharply - also known as a 'sugar rush' and when it drops, you want more fake or real sugar. The stuff was originally developed for diabetics, but now dietitians, doctors etc are telling diabetics not to eat the stuff because of the above^^^^^^ so it seems to me a good idea not to eat it either. It doesn't help get you slim!
Retraining your tastebuds to prefer less sugar + fat in what you eat helps you to lose weight. I have read posts (on other forums) about people prefering apples to cream cakes because they have been able to retrain their tastebuds to prefer less processed and sugar-filled/fake sugar-filled + fatty foods.0 -

Wow. I could've written the exact same thing. It's amazing how often I see someone posting with something in common with me on here, but that's so 'in common' it's spooky
Earlier this year, my mum bought Paul McKenna's slimming book and CD (and was doing very well with it too until she had the builders in over the summer and decided to concentrate on hanging onto her sanity for a bit instead of shedding her pounds). My teenage son listened to it once or twice, since he's got a bit of the family tendency towards 'hefty' too, and I was amazed when, within hours, he developed a liking for spinach. He doesn't like greens or salad, or even anything much that looks like it might have a vitamin in it, but since then he's been eating raw spinach by the handful as if he's dipping into a packet of crisps. He still hates all other greens, but I'm convinced I've witnessed a miracle
Inspired by this, I bought Paul McKenna's '7 Days to Change Your Life' not long after (though realistically expecting it to take considerably longer!), and was dropping off after listening to the CD for the first time when I suddenly had a brainwave regarding rearranging my kitchen cupboards. This might not seem like much, but the cupboard arrangement here is a real pain in the ar...m, and I'd been racking my brains for a solution for months. Suddenly I had one, and it's worked like a dream ever since. For me at least, Paul McKenna's CDs seem to access the part of the mind that happily solves niggling problems and gets the 'forward motion' juices going, and I listen to the CD often. I've not tried my mum's CD, but wouldn't be surprised if using the other one guided me towards this thread anyway, which is solution enough for me. I think Paul McKenna would highly approve of the fact that I'm dropping pounds and eating cottage pieYup, I rate him highly.
I spotted the link to the thread in Martin's e-mail last night, and thought at the time that it would be great if some of the ideas in the thread became the basis for one of Martin's next books. I think 'Lose Weight The Old Style Way' would fly off the shelves
As usual, I'm not mentioning anyone by name (partly cos I type too slow and know there'll have been another half a dozen posts since I started, and partly because I don't have MrsM's stamina), but well done to everyone who's stayed the course today, and 'chin-up' to anyone who may have wavered. Tomorrow's another day
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -

I have to agree with odds too... and guess who else qualified as a chef when she was 18
In the last 8 weeks, i have had no cravings at all...it is crazy.. hubby sits eating ice-cream (one of my former fave foods)...crisps, peanuts etc..and i have no interest at all :T ....i bake bread regularly and can take it or leave it...at one time i waould be like a pac man.. not even waiting for it to cool..
And strangest of all is that the smell or thought of choc makes me feel squiffy :j .... i can only put it down to eating this OS way...
Given the choice i would pick fruit over any cake, choc etc and a roast chicken dinner over any take away you could mention... and this is a nearly 36 year old who has tried many diets, many times and as a result had 10st to lose :rotfl: ..... i tell you something...when i get to the weight i want to... i am so tempted to turn this way of eating into a book :rotfl:
Kitty..love the kitchen..glad you have reclaimed it for yourself :T

Re. Paul McKenna - I've just thought of something else. If you go to his website ( http://www.paulmckenna.com/ ) there's a link to a free trance download somewhere on the left hand side. Unless they've changed it, it's the same as the CD that comes with 'Change your life in 7 days' (or whatever it's called). I couldn't see a difference, anyway.
Goodnight again to the un-named pound-shedding massesEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
Hi everyone,
Late tonight - I'm not sleeping well, ok when I drop off but take ages getting there - it's been 2.30 am the past two nights. I have read that lack of sleep makes you put on weight (I think the body tries to hoard its resources) so i must get back into sleeping properly.
Anyway today I ate my normal cornflakes and banana for brekkie, ryvita with salmon at lunch and grilled chicken with salad and a corn on the cob for dinner. Have not wanted anything sweet at all so I'm really pleased. I'm sorry for boringly posting my meals but it really is helping me keep on the straight and narrow knowing that otherwise I'd have to confess to the two large bars of chocolate I would have eaten by now.
Hello to all the newbies. I'm not getting time to read the threads properly at the moment but I'll try to catch up soon.

HI everyone. I had a stinker of a migrane y'day so ate nothing except paracetamol + neurofen from lunchtime onwards and strangely I wasn't hungry this morning either, but still feeling a bit woozy. SO every cloud has a silver lining!
Had a dinner of HM mincedbeef and leek pie (spuds on top for me and pastry for 'im) and was fine with that. Spoilt it tho' by going to the shop late for milk and I bought some treats for my boy's lunchboxes - thought it was a multi pack of minty aeros and it turned out to be one huge bar. so me and DH had a big chunk of it and now I feel a bit sick!
One thing I do like tonight is get in competative eating with DH! Let me try to explain - He is a real glutton and really puts the food away ( but isn't fat) so a packet of biscuits can last less than an evening for example. So when I bring the shopping in, if I want to get any of the nice things I have to stuff 'em in my gob before he gets at them! (this means biccies, choccy or even fruit eg grapes) . OR say on a friday night he has several packets of crisps in a row with his drink and I start to feel 'why can't I do that?' so I grab some before he scoffs a whole multi pack ( this is not so bad as I only eat salt n vinegar )
This sounds like I'm on my way to an eating disorder doesn't it??Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Evening all,
Congratulations all you good people who are being successful at getting rid of the pounds or kilos the OS way.
Eventually plucked up the courage to weigh myself and have been horror stricken to discover that I am now 14 st 5 lbs....3 lbs heavier than on Ist September...not really surprised as I have been far from good....portions large, not enough water and bl***y cakes, although not so many sweets and chocolate things.
I came back on Monday night and was thrilled to realise that we have a wonderful lot of mixed greens coming on in my square foot boxes, so have had at least two servings a day...tried Leslie Kenton's raw food about 20 years ago and found it helpful....put together a large mixing bowl of chopped greens, lettuce, carrots, beansprouts, apples, dried fruit, seeds every morning and finished it off by the end of the day...I had a couple of pieces of fruit in the morning and protein, veg and potato or rice for dinner as well. I felt really well as my digestive system is normally slow so this manner of eating speeded things up nicely! Went off to America on holiday, lost the habit and have never done it since!
Today I have eaten:
Brunch...2 small fresh mackerel fillets, breadnbutter with tbspoon apple jelly, coffee;
3 hm crab/fishcakes, mixed leaves, tspoon sweet chilli sauce, slice sponge
Serving of spaghetti bolognese, more bread n butter
Slice sponge cake, white coffee
Just realised that I have had very little fruit, maybe have a pear or two before bed.
Night all
