    I need some help please.

I've bought a turkey drumstick to make into soup but I've never done this before only made vegetable soup. Do I cook the drumstick first and then boil it or do i just boil it? Any other tips would be welcome.

    Thanks

    Jue

Just pop it in as is, Julie. Add, if you have them : a bay leaf or two, any other " shrubby " aromatic herbs like thyme, sage, rosemary, marjoram etc - fresh if poss, if not then small pinches of the dried will do. Pop in at least something oniony ie normal onion, leek, garlic, spring onions etc and a carrot or two if you have them to hand, roughly chopped. Bring to boil them simmer away for a couple of hours at least. When the meat is falling off the bone, discard bayleaf and any twiggy herbs, take the drumstick out and pick the meat off in bite sized pieces and leave the icky bits - dump back into stock with some more veggies finely chopped this time - ie more carrot/onion, parsnip, leek, corn, peppers, celery, mushrooms etc and just cook until the veggies are done - voila, yummy soup :) also you can if you like add noodles or small soup pasta at the second stage. Good luck !

Heh RS great minds think nearly alike :P

btw if making stock for next day rather than soup for immediate use, I don't take the skin off poultry - as yes its fatty but helps to give flavour and texture to stock - I leave it to chill in the fridge after initial cooling off and skim the solidified fat off the next day :) thats just a personal thing tho.

Ooh yes - I forgot about tandoori chicken with boiled rice and that lovely yoghurt with mint and cucumber - I like that yoghurt stuff more than anything else. And Poppadums are quite good too - MUCH better than naan bread - you can eat about 6 poppadums for the equivilant of quite a small naan.

Ah yes but crunchy cheesy-feet flavour poppadums or lovely yummy peshwari naan? Hmmm can see where I'm gonna give in if we decide on indian. Probably gonna be voting for chinese then

    Afternoon all :D

Well done on the loss - juliejim, :T

    Hello and welcom Essex-Girl :D

Mean Marie :T on losing...and it isn't pathetic to be that happy...you deserve to feel happy..and pleased with yourself...so WELL DONE :j and we won't abandon you...you are stuck with us now :p

Recovering spendaholic... sorry this is such a time of bad and sad memories for you.... i know a tiny little bit of what you may feel like.. we lost my dad on the 22nd DEC.. my 16th birthday and had his funeral on new years eve.... but it will be 20 years this birthday, its his birthday tomorrow -he would have been 68 , he only made it to 48 - still he got more years than expected... had his first stroke in his 20s and had replcement valve fitted etc... had he not.. me and the 2 of the other 4 wouldn't be here... Im fortunate that im in a place now where i always think of my dad and smile... or laugh about some of the things he would do :T .... And at last i have stopped my emotions dictating what i eat..which is a miracle :p .....
On a lighter note.... tesco finest jam n cream scones...are THE most scrumptious thing ever :rotfl: ...i used to love them..and it was strange as you could never eat just one..it just wasn't possible ;)
Im sure no-one noticed how much of that yummy food you ate whilst in Germany..did you notice just how much all German folks can pack away  .. they put me to shame.. the portions are HUGE... even when i wasn't being carefull me n hubby sould quite happily share a meal :p

Right so now you are under instruction to be nice to yourself and not punish yourself whilst you get through this period where so much has happened in your life ;)

This is it :T on your loss .... like you I have just had to get my bum out of the house... I really don't like "exercise" but i know i need to do something- a bike was a no no as not only are we surounded by hills here but i have medical thing with my head so sometimes my balance is appaling :p .. i considered a mini trampoline but the thought of:j would bore me.. and i can't be doing with buying more equipment to take up room and hang my clothes on ;) ... So i have decided that walking is the answer... and so far im really enjoying the fresh air... and its helped with the loss this week, so im going to try and keep it up..

    Sallysrm...welcome back :D ...
have to agree with "when we feel sh*t we eat sh*t" but i have also realised that "when i eat sh*t..i feel like sh*t" its that good old cycle again isn't it ;)

well hopefully frogga has made it back from work without any "diseases" or having "gone through the menopause "..... hope the weather wasn't to bad frogga...

I ended up not having my weetabix and then eggs on toast for lunch... ended up having 2 toast n butter for brekkie and then 3 ryvita thingies with low fat cream cheese for lunch..and have a huge vat of corned beef hash under way on the stove... so im gonna have a soak and read some mags whilst hubby gives it an occasional stir for me ;)
Have a lovely well done loaf just out of the oven..lets see how long this will last with hubby in the house :p ..not long i guess :D

well i had better get off and grab a bath... talk to you all later :D

    Hi everybody,

I've been lurking around the os board for a while but this is my first post. I'd like to join you all on your weight loss journey

I've done both WW and SW in the past but I seem to end up throwing money away by continually falling off the wagon.

I'd like to get start eating healthly - consistantly! I have put on around a stone since summer, mainly due to me meeting my OH and constantly eating out.

I have 4 weeks til I'm off to the caribbean with my family for christmas so I'd like to shift a bit of weight before then so i can fit back into my trousers comfortably again - i have to hold my breath at the moment!

I love this site!! :money: i am loving cooking from scratch! Although i have a feeling that my Breadmaker is why I am back in this state! Does anyone have any low fat recipes?

As I only have 4 weeks to go I am also having a clear my cupboard challenge so I have more money to spend while i'm away.

I'm really inspired by all your losses and it just goes to show how cooking from scratch and cutting down portion size can work

I've been really ill this week and have been stuffing my face with chocolate and any comfort food i can find in the house :( but todcay is a new day so I am back on the wagon!

So far: porridge with nuts fruit and banana, pasta and tomato sauce, alpen cereal bar and banana. beef and veg curry in the slow cooker for tea.

    low fat fromage frais

    Hi there Svjenni..and welcome:D

What sorts of recipes are you looking for?..let me know and i will trawl through mine and see what i can come up with ;)

What a holiday you are going on  .... hope you have a brilliant time..im sure you will shift a few lbs before you go....

I don't put any fat or milk in my bread and it is stunning if i say so myself ;) i make it by hand now and with fresh yeast as i find it quicker than putting the BM onto dough setting (i always baked in the oven anyway) so that saves some cals... although hubby can't leave it alone :rotfl: ...if you want the recipe let me know.

Taplady -You can't beat a home made mince pie... unless its with 2 mince pies :p . Hope you have a lovely relaxed weekend :D

Frogga... glad you made it home okay :D

    Hi pigpen

You don't eat much do you? my sis and sil are the same - i can't believe how little some people get by on

If you were to look at the cals you ate today..i would think you still had too few (depending on the sausages)... so i doubt you have done any harm.. you just had less volume X higher cals instead of loads of food X less cals...
Ok thats not great if you were doing it day in day out.. but an occasional day like that won't do your overall target any harm..
So don't be so hard on yourself...:D

Hi there im back.... just been and had a poke about on a site that gives cals etc in various foods.... and doing a quick reckon up (just used the basic sausage etc)you still came in at under 1000cals ... and they recommend eating more than that don't they..... so you see you have done no harm

Isn't it as bad to eat too few calories as too many?? Especially at the moment as I am totally inactive due to my arthritic legs?? I am certain I was made with spare parts!!

(the sausages were just cheapy tesco ones.. not the value ones though)

That was actually a 'feast' day for me!!

    Today I had..

    nothing for breakfast..

a bacon sarnie for lunch.. grilled bacon 2 slices of homemade bread with no butter... (only because hubby made it! I wouldn't have bothered ordinarily)

Dinner.. I had a moderate amount of tuna pasta bake with cheese.. half a garlic naan bread

Off out for a gallon of vodka and lemonade tonight though!!

    Evening all:T
I've had the day from h*ll BUT I've not binged :T :T ok I had a bag of proper crisps this afternoon rather than my low fat ones but that's all :D

Managed to get the car booked in for Monday, getting it done for the price of the parts plus a tenner so that cheered me up :D
Then journey home turned into a trek - buses missing, trains cancelled and so full I couldn't move never mind sit down  Why does it always happen on a Friday when you want to get home????
At least OH picked me up from the station, if I'd have had to walk I think it would have tipped me over the edge

Had a cup of tea to reduce the blood pressure then made marinated quorn fillets, rice and mixed veg with yoghurt for afters so not bad. Sat here now with a nice glass of wine - well, it is Friday ;)
