Hey Lois, please don't forget that exercise may well make you heavier initially but it's muscle not fat. The great thing is that instead of just sitting there on your hips/waist/chin (delete as appropriate, or in my case all three :D) looking not so attractive, this weight is actually working very hard for you helping you burn off extra calories. How cool is that?! So please don't be disheartened, the gym really will help you see benefits. And for me at least, being toned is far more attractive than being thin.

What kind of exercise are you doing if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the support bails - I've only done one proper session at the gym, but I expect to see a big difference straight away! I know it doesn't happen that quickly, so I won't let this week's gain put me off.

I went to the induction on Sunday afternoon, and just went round each CV machine to get to know how they work, and then tried a few of the weights machines, again just to make myself familiar with them. Last night I warmed up on the bike, then did 10 minutes rowing and 10 minutes on the treadmill, followed by a short session on each weights machine, and 100 crunches (5 sets of 20) with the abdominal exerciser. I intentionally kept it to a minimum as I didn't want to do too much too soon, but I could feel the difference.

I'm going again tomorrow night, and I'm expecting to be given a programme to work to so that I know what I should be doing.

I WISH I knew how to put pictures or links on this..... is there a book or something I could access to find out how to do that? If I try to copy and paste it just doesn't work.

Hi Grannynise - can I join the brussels club too please, I love them. :D

To display images, upload the picture file to Photobucket www.photobucket.com. Once done you will see at the bottom of the uploaded picture 3 link options. Click the bottom one to copy it - its the one surrounded by [img.......img] - . It's this string option that you paste into MSE to display the chart.

    Hope this helps.

The curse of the chart! Oh No! I wouldn't have agreed if I had known about that!

Actually, 8 of us (so far) have had maintains this week (full results later tonight, folks). There must be something in the water...perhaps it is due to the weather? Who knows.

    Full chart later tonight folks...

Sorry efrieze - I didn't realise it was jinxed, that explains a lot!

On the plus side, your thanks count will go through the roof, check mine out.. :D

Now the next question ..... in the unlikely event that I'd want a smaller picture of my dream archaeologist ...... how can I avoid taking up so much space?

I am trying to maintain, honest just trying to understand the balance and to be 100% honest I am worried that I might start gaining. Does that make sense? I am getting really anal about it all, working out the calories, trying to ensure I balance the books calorie wise.

I suppose the issue could be I cannot face NOT going to the gym, I know I shouldnt go so often right now or if I should I should cut down on CV work and raise the weight work, but right now I walk in there is every good intention in the world, but once I am on the cycle I seem to be driven to work hard! Does that make sense? am I talking sense?

I hate writing this sort of post as I dont want people to mis read what I am saying, I have always had a weight problem, still do actually, and for once I have found a magic formula to lose weight, oddly though that part is quite easy, now I have to change and make adjustments and I guess I need to take a deep breath and take a gamble, but the formula is more difficult this time as the margain of error is greater. Again I just need to trust myself :)

    Sorry, mini rant over

Suggs, you are talking complete and utter sense, don't you worry about that! And of course you're allowed to write a post like that (or like anything in fact) - that's what we're here for.

I can completely understand where you're coming from and rest assured there are many, many people out there who have/are experiencing the same thing.

In the same way as anything else, exercise can become addictive. Now, I'm not saying that you are an exercise addict, but simply that you have found something that has made a massive difference to your life and you dread going back to your old ways. Of course you do. Exercise of course also gives you a natural high, which adds to your desire to keep going back for more (kinda like chocolate only healthier:D). I think it's perfectly natural to feel the way you do.

The best thing is that you are aware you need to strike a balance and also that that means being brave. It's hard to take a step back from something you have grown to love and, to some extent, depend on. But you CAN do it! I'm not sure how much you are going to the gym these days but try cutting back by one day or, if that seems altogether too scary, just limit yourself to the amount of time you're there - book an appointment or arrange to meet someone so you can't keep going. In time you'll see that you can actually do less to maintain your fantastic loss. Don't forget to be realistic too - if you put on a little one week, don't panic and think it's all going down the tubes. These things fluctuate, just keep an eye on it and if it continues to creep up then readjust again.

Ok, my mini rant over! Just trust in yourself Suggs, you're gonna be just fine xx

That sounds good, LL - building up gradually is the best way, especially if you're new to a particular sport or type of exercise. I hope you have a good instructor to help you out as they're ace when you can find them! Glad you're taking rest days too, v important.

Happy to help if you have any questions etc, can share the little I know!
