hi i was wondering if anyone could advise me of how many calories to eat in order to lose weight. i have been trying to stick to 1000 Kals a day. im 9 stone 3 and i wana be 8stone 3. so i really want to lose a stone. is 1000 kals a day enough to lose weight or should i cut it down abit more.

i am greatful of any help and guidance thanks

Hi 123money, I would echo what The Dragon (I love this name by the way!) and Grannynise are saying - 1000 calories a day is not enough so please don't go any lower. Reducing your calorie intake that much literally is starving yourself: your body will go into shut down mode and everything you eat (yes, even healthy stuff) will be stored as fat. Now I'm sure that's not the result you're going for!

I'm 5ft 4 too and although I appreciate that everyone is very different, 8 stone 3 is way off my radar in terms of a healthy weight. Rather than focusing on the numbers ie a stone lighter, why is it that you want to lose the weight? If it's about feeling 'fat', perhaps doing some exercise you love will help you tone up instead?

Tell us a little bit more about the reasons behind the 8 stone 3 benchmark and we'll be able to help. Now, go and eat something!:D x

Grannynise and Beanielou, much as I'd love to be able to tell you the answer, I don't really know how! I guess there are less fatty snacks around to munch on and I was more active than I have been in quite a long time (which is ace cos it means I'm getting better!:T). I certainly wasn't an angel by any stretch of the imagination!

As for the curries, English curry is very different to Indian, I think it has a much higher fat content etc. If you look past all the 'normal' curries on an English menu, you'll find dahl or dal, probably in the side dishes section and that's what I ate most of the time. Don't be misled by where they place it in the menu, it's made of yummy lentils (a fab food with lots of protein) and fills you up nicely. I haven't tried this here yet but we're going for a Desh (our local fantastic curry house) on Friday so I'll give it a go and see if the results are the same!

We ate quite a few thalis, which is basically an all-you-can-eat silver tray full of little metal bowls of curry and dahl with rice and chappati and pappadum...phew!...so I definitely wasn't starving myself!

I did eat almost entirely vegetarian so I don't know if that helped? but if you give the veggie option a go, remember to eat lots of protein to help with the weight loss (the plan I'm about to start advises eating it with every meal) - lentils, pulses, beans etc.

Mmm, my mouth is watering thinking about all those curries - is that wrong so early in the morning??:rotfl:

  • Wow - what a wonderful thread to run across. I admit I haven't read the whole thing, but it seems I am always trying to lose a few pounds. I did really well about 9 years ago and lost 30 lbs. I used a low carb diet to do it.

I was able to keep it off for about 7 years, but the last couple years I've gradually put back about 15 lbs. Ugh! The low carb thing doesn't seem to work as easily for me any longer. I must be getting older and my system is changing (just turned 39). :)

Well, I started back again today, trying to cut out some of those carbs, to see if I can't get back to having my clothes fit me properly again and not feeling so pudgy around the middle. I SHALL SUCCEED! I keep telling myself that. :)

Congrats to all of you who are doing so well.

    Hi everyone!!

Well done to the losers :D

I managed to get to my weigh in at the last minute yesterday and can report a loss of precisely nothing.... so a maintain for me this week... bah!!!

Oh well back on it for me today, even though I've got a really stinky cold and can't taste anything at all. I suppose I'll need to count the lemsips as syns as well :(

I' m 5ft 4 also, and my ultimate aim is around the 10 1/2 stone mark, this is based on how I looked last time I was that weight.. a size 12-ish with reasonable sized bumps still :D But I think it really depends on the individual and how you like to look and feel, also the size of your body frame. There is a way to work out your build using the size of your wrists on here http://familyfun.go.com/yourtime/fitness/feature/hea_framesize/hea_framesize.html

Ooh, thanks for that 1969, I've just done the non-scientific method (as I can't find my tape measure grr!) and I apparently have a large frame!

I'm also aiming for the 10 1/2 stone mark (also 5ft4) so good luck!

This is not an OS money saving topic so I'll move it to the I wanna board where it can be merged with the ongoing weightloss thread there. Thanks.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Were you reading the right section of the packaging? Tesco's have percentages on the front, which show how much of the recommended daily allowance the food contains, rather than how much of the food is made up of fat.

They confused me when they first started using them, so you might have misunderstood.

Yes, was reading the list on the front andthen on the back the bit that concerns me the most is carbohydrates of which are sugars, for me has t o be below 6g or I just put it back;) :D

    Happy to help Victory, lol!

Right, I am too impatient to wait til tomorrow so I'm starting today! Finally, after months of waiting!:j :T:j

It's not going well so far - been up for hours, have full blown cold, v tired, no food in house and can't find tape measure!! But I will not be stopped!

So I can't measure but I've weighed in at 12 stone 3 1/2 (so that's a 3 1/2 pound loss for September LL, thanks). I'm going to aim for 10 1/2 stone and see how that feels.

Okay, so 25 pounds (nice round number) at 1 pound a week takes me to 25th March 2008.

Target set, off I go - wish me luck! Now all I have to do is find enough energy to go food shopping!:D

Use a piece of string/wool....cut it up at your measurements then measure with a ruler later
