A 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 LX, it's actually getting negative depreciation now. It's first owner was Europcar. I can give it a full service and a cam belt for £40.

My other car is a 1982 Ford Cortina Crusader 2.0, which I bought a couple of years ago. It's the most expensive car that I've ever bought, though I don't think that I'll lose too much on it, if I ever sell it. It's done 43,000 miles, never been welded and has most of its original paint.
  • My new car is a VW Golf, hopefully coming in two weeks.
So far in my life I've had
Ford Fiesta 1991, purchased in 2003, had a manual choke but bought for £475 and sold for £450 2 years later.
Ford Escort 1995, bought in 2004 for £800. Sold in 2010 for £300. Never broke down in 6 years, most reliable and trouble free car I've owned.
Renault Clio 2003. Bought in 2010 for £3750. Excellent fuel economy, kept as a second car and recently gave to a friend in need. Shocking electrics and sun roof leak had to be fixed.
Then the crappy Astra that I mentioned in the op. No chance of me ever seeing a Vauxhall on my drive again.

Just hope the Golf brings me luck.

1992 Merc 190E 1.8 petrol auto. Bought to replace a Mondeo diesel that I wasn't using enough. Paid top dollar as it is immaculate with one previous owner and full MBSH. I'm sure I will lose a lot on it if I sell it, but it is a lovely old barge and I am enjoying owning it. The quality of build and the ease of working on it amaze me. Owned 9 months.

1999 Mazda MX-5 Mk 2 10th Anniversary. 1.8 petrol with LSD and Bilsteins. Pocket money cost, bought to ease the pain of selling the last of the motorbikes, not a crisis car, no, not at all. Massive fun on A and B roads, less so on motorways. Comfy and fast enough (it feels a lot faster than the speedo says). Two weeks in France last year with the roof down every day was worth the purchase price on its own. Practical enough to be a daily driver. So far, 100% reliable. Owned 2 years.

I like them both. I really can't justify having two cars (I cycle a lot too), but every time I think I will sell one of them I can't decide which, so I put off the decision until another day.

    Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
1993 BMW 525TD, 77k miles, 5 owners from new (three of those are me and my OH) and it's a piece of junk that's currently in the doghouse having spat out its aux belt on the way to work this morning. Tensioner spring failed, belt shredded, and took the plastic idler pulley with it.

With recovery (no AA or similar) and the repair I'm now £170 lighter than this morning - which is much better than I've managed in the gym lately :D

It probably won't, that reputation for reliability only really applied 30 years ago. Unfortunately people (those who know little about cars) still perpetuate the myth as social gossip and this is reflected in the high price of used vehicles.

Keep a very close eye on oil consumption, keep your ears open and investigate any/all unusual engine noises, don't leave anything to chance.

    Good luck though.
