Clearly you aren't aware that torque is a function of power.

Joe has already picked this up, but it's better to say power is a function of torque. Torque is the amount of twist the pistons can give the crankshaft; power is how often the engine can do this in a given period of time. Torque and revs are the basic parameters; power is a function of them combined.

As you said, power = torque x (engine) speed.

In vehicle terms it makes far more sense to use torque as the primary characteristic because it's entirely possible to develop significant torque while producing zero power (both measured at the driving wheels).

In fact every car does so momentarily every time it moves away from a standstill unless it's rolling downhill - sufficient torque has to be produced at the drive wheels to overcome rolling resistance before the car will move, but NO power is generated at the wheels until movement starts.

External combustion engines are the king of this because they can produce massive torque at zero engine rpm, creating torque with zero power. The flying Scotsman - with 6 driving wheels of 6'8" each and a maximum tractive effort of 29385 lbf - could develop about 32000 lbft of torque at each wheel while producing no power.

Which makes any Nissan look like one of those rubber band cotton-reel tanks some of us used to make but, more importantly, underlines the point that it's torque that matters for everything except all-out top speed :D
  • Not quite as good on a track** perhaps, but fine for going to work, carting !!!! to the tip, and visiting Tesco on a Friday.
I think I'd rather cycle and go to Waitrose..:D

OK, late starter here and not interested in spending money on cars so

Marina banger, £100 and sold for £70 after 10 months.
Marina - more powerful version with towbar. Wasn't worried about
    rear collisions when visiting London..
Escort - from an auction. Cam belt went on way home...
Nova - a lot better car, purchased from my Dad. Sold it to a young
lass who was chuffed to bits at a decent car at a decent price.
Idiot drunken BF stole keys and took out a bus shelter..
Rover 216 - from my dad again. No power steering so a daily
workout. Fortunately I'm a sporty lass. Suffered one
motorway collision with a large night-visiting male
Alsatian, and pinched and used in one post office robbery!
Fiesta - from my late Dad. Only sold as I was moving country, but
it did a number of very laden runs to the Alps.
Fabia - LHD. Sold for the above reason. Cost of new lights, speedo
disc, re-registering, for a 10 years plus car wasn't worth it.
Hyundai i20 - 2009 bought S/H Also familiar with winter runs to the Alps
    and returning laden with wine.

Cycling isn't really an option for my commute, I'm afraid, and we don't have Waitrose in the North. It's too grim.

You've not missed much, over priced and over rated but trendy with middle class yummy mummy's

There's one in Hull. How grim is where you live? ;)

I certainly don't miss being able to visit Waitrose.

    North?

Hardly. It's grim, I grant you, but it's not *northern* grim :)

    Getting closer to topic....

    I have one of these:
    red.jpg

It's loud, fast, no creature comforts, high VED, low insurance, 20mpg taking it easy, 7mpg on a track day, you can throw it into a corner and steer using the throttle, it'll do 90 mph around what would normally be a 30mph max bend and it stops with so much force that it has to be fitted with 4 point harnesses instead of seatbelts to stop passengers crushing their feet.

Anything else is just a fancy shopping trolley :p
