  • Question - would you live in a four bedroom house with four adults and one bathroom?

Good luck with your tenants then. Because they're going to have to be really desperate (pun intended) to accept that arrangement.
Would you want to share a house with total strangers and those limited facilities?

as said previously, head of private housing from my local authority said no need to install another bathroom/toilet (thus nothing to do with planning permission?)

Have you got planning permission ?

You honestly physically can't convert a bedroom into a bathroom? Or at least an ensuite?

We have four adults sharing a three bedroom house with a separate toilet and bathroom. We regret taking on the second lodger because it requires serious negotiation in the mornings. And we're all friends here, letting it to unrelated people may clash horrendously.

Wow things have changed in recent years, first world problems indeed.

Even 10 years ago when in shared accomodation anything over 1 bathroom for 4 people was seen as a luxury, there was another more understandable one that was a converted ex hotel I lived 8 years ago which had 1 toilet for every 4 bedrooms so if one was used go to another (so meant to be 1 toilet for every 4 tenants)

The only thing people thought was above and beyond was if toilet and shower/bath was seperate that way if someone was washing themselves another can go to toilet.

I lived somewhere which had 2 toilets and in all honesty the only time the 2nd got used was when someone was in main one.

So yes 2 toilets are a big bonus but its a first world problem not to have it.

When the housing people said it was okay, did they know you were thinking of removing the existing bedroom basins?

I have never stayed in even the lowliest hotel room that didn't have at least hand washing facilities. How many times do you automatically wash your hands? You check your money, wash hands; you eat an orange, wash hands; you slap moisturiser on your face before dressing, wash hands...

And if someone was desperate enough to pee in the basin because someone else was taking a leisurely bath, isn't that marginally better than peeing out the window?
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

And we are living in the first world. So what happens in the third world isn't particularly relevant.

I was thinking as much of washing facilities as the toilets.
If I'm to be at work on time then I don't want to have to either get up at silly o'clock or wait in a queue behind three other people.

At 0230, I know what I would do, and I wouldn't call it 'abusing the privilege' as it's me who'll be brushing my teeth there in the morning.

That would be fine if people didn't bathe every day. If they do then 4 people sharing one bathroom with no separate toilet is very inconvenient unless some people are prepared to get up very early or some people bathe in the evening.

That is what I did when I was in halls - I got up before everyone else so that I could use the shower first.
