peel (with a knife, rather than a potato peeler, like you do with a swede, as its a tough ol' root!). Then you can do different things with it. I think you can roast it along with spuds and other root veg. you can thinly slice it to make a kind of coleslaw, or you can chop it into chunks along with potato and boil, then mash it with the potato. Together with some nutmeg it gives a lovely celery flavour to the potato. I adore it - got about 6 growing in the garden! if you like potato mashed with other foods (like potato with swede, or potato with swede & carrot, or Colcannon, or the dutch variations) then you'll like this, provided you like celery of course!

thanks but there's too much of it to use up in one go in mash but I appreciate the ideas. I'm thinking of making soup and found this recipe

    hope it's a good one! :)

I've been buying Tesco Value butter and noticed it had gone up by loads - I am appalled reading this thread that so many other things have gone up too.

Does anyone know if Lurkpak has gone up ? As its Danish maybe their production costs have remained the same ???

Just as I start bringing the cost of my shopping down by shrewd buying, the supermarkets cotton on and rip me off by putting prices up

Tesco value butter was up to 93p when I looked last Friday. I only tend to use it for baking, so bought Stork instead. Didn't think about checking if it has any nasties in it though, was more concerned about the price at the time! :o

one thing i have spotted, in Aldi at least: UHT milk, per litre, is 44p - that works out cheaper than fresh milk, also from Aldi, that retails at something like 62p per litre... I've been buying the UHT milk for a week now and i can't taste the difference (for skimmed milk anyway) and have been using it for everything i would use normal milk for, without any difficulties.

I haven't shopped around for UHT milk so further savings may be possible..

I think I must have been hibernating because I only found out about the price rises yesterday when I was waiting for a bus, an old woman started telling me all about it...

I bought milk from Tesco at the weekend and it was £1.09 for 2 litres (Tesco Pure S/S) and also Anchor butter for 98p and Utterly Butterly marg for 67p... To be honest I don't really keep track of the rises so not sure if these are abnormal or not.

Frugal - Lurpak Spreadable (one I buy) went up a couple of weeks ago from 98 pence to £1.12 in one go for a small tub!!! It's our one luxury a week, but I'm spreading it thin now & telling DS what my mum told me when I was a kid - either jam OR butter, not both!
My milkman has put up the price of milk, too, from 41 pence to 45 pence this week - massively increased production costs of the farmer. Don't mind this, as we just use 2 pints a day usually, & noticed the other day that single pints in the various supermarkets were about 40 pence anyway. I'm a real anorak about supporting farmers & other local producers, so would always buy from the milkman/farmers market etc even if prices go up - better in the pockets of the actual farmers than the supermarkets' shareholders:)
