:) seems like a bargain, sukysue!

I recently purchased a (very cheap!) Acer laptop @ £299 (not as good spec as yours!); and really can't fault it. Seems like a nice quality build, very sturdy and the screen is spot on; so I'm sure the gemstone will be spot on.

Ahh! Unreserved apologies all round then. The Acer Gemstone 17 inch that comes up when you go to the laptop section is the higher spec'd version i was quoting.

Great value at £399. whilst the spec doesnt match the cheapest Dell 17 inch model at £505, its more than adequate.

do you really need to spend £800 just so your dd can play game , you can pick up a ps2 for under 100 , get a cheap portable for 60 and the ps2 game and buy a cheaper laptop as well ?
  • I've just ordered the Acer for my daughter and also used my E coupons that I had been saving up so got it for about £324 in the end. I just couldn't match that spec for that price anywhere else. Pick it up Monday at my local Tesco so delivery was free too. The laptop was reduced from £599. I've seen it on other websites for about £450ish. I've recently got myself and Acer laptop with a 20" screen and I've had no problems with it. Its got a built in webcam and 1gb of ram and runs Vista Home Premium. :j

I've had 2 Acer laptops and they are still going, I never had to format my first one for 4 years! And never have I had any problems with either of them. The latter was a Travelmate2420 from tesco's my b'f bought it for himself but I ended up with it :D

Love it and it has got some hammering these past few months as my other pc was packed up ready for a house move that never happened.

It even played online games as good as any desktop too! Bonus for me when i have the time :)

The cost couldn't be beat for either of them, my first one in its day was £700 but the specs it came with couldn't match anything and saw many a laptop with inferior specs for more money.

It was a humble 15" screen and my son is enjoying it for homework now. :D

Looks like you were thrown like i was - the OP subsequently put a link to the one at £399 from Tescos, rather than the one that appears in their laptop section at £799..

The Tesco one (£399) comes with 80GB. A few months ago I bought a new pc (Vista), which I share with my 11 year-old son, 70GB is now taken !! (10GB go into recovery disk). I have just ordered one (Acer Gemstone £399), for mobility reason but I'm not sure that I would recommend it as the only computer in the house even though the look is hard to resist. or for £349 with 120GB or £499 (both @ Tesco) they also offer another Acer with 160 GB HD and 2 GB RAM but 15" and, from the picture, got full keybord (separate number keys like normal pc keyboard. But slightly less attractive. I found Laptopdirect and ebuyer also have good price. Tesco hardly give any information on spec.
  • I have been on the lookout for a new laptop for a while now and I thought this offer was too good to turn down. I picked up this laptop yesterday and it does look very stylish and well built and now for the problems, I set the computer up and then I deleted Norton (don’t like it and would rather use AVG) after this, the laptop would not switch off, so I did a system restore and again deleted Norton it was fine for a while but again this morning it would not switch off. I then phoned the Tesco direct helpline and was put through to Acer Technical Services, to the most unhelpful, obnoxious and arrogant man I have ever spoken too in my life, I explained I have already carried out a restore (I am no computer expert but know enough to get by) he then accused me a being a lair and that I couldn’t have possibly done a restore and that software was not covered by the warranty (hello consumer rights, fit for purpose and all that) and if I dared to send the computer back I would be charged and then he hung up on me. I was not being rude would never swear and remained calm throughout the situation. Why would I lie about a problem I need help with this man needs some common sense.

I phoned Tesco and they are replacing the laptop under the 28 day replacement scheme which does seem a waste as I am sure there must be an easy fix to the software problem. Tesco were polite and as efficient as ever. In summary the price is very good along with triple points and there is a 500 point code on the appropriate thread you can also use, works out to be around £330 if you take the deals (as I always do) but just hope nothing goes wrong with your laptop as there customer service if just about the worst I have experienced in my entire 37 years on this planet.
