If you're not going to be helpful, stop posting in this thread.
Comments like "I would never have done this" are just worthless gloating.
If you can't be helpful, shut up.

The comment re dd is supposed to be helpful.. It is sign up and forget!

And just for info I have no idea when my mot is due exactly but I know at least which quarter it's in so I check before that quater.
  • Thanks Stator. Some people on here are missing the point of my advice request. I'm not asking for your help to set up my calendar. As I said before. It's one payment a year,10 months down the line I'm not thinking have I paid tax, I'm thinking it's sorted. Last year I had a pregnant wife, 3 of us were sleeping in one room, no bathroom, no kitchen & I was trying to get my flat in liveable condition. It had to be ready by the time of the birth so the last thing on my mind was to keep checking my yearly payments everyday of the week. So please stop posting unhelpful comments about where you keep your calendars. It's no use to me. If you've got something to say helping in reducing the overall fine then I'd appreciate it.

PS: The DVLA could of fined me a month after tax was due as the capture camera is on my road, but they waited so the fine got bigger for me. They also could of sent me notification of the fines when I updated my V5C in June, but they rather wait for a more to build up against me. It’s unethical.

Umm, are you forgetting a minor detail? They DID try and contact you. But you weren't at the address you'd said you were at...

Read it again. No they didn't. I'm not sure why you are still on this thread?

You said they did contact you at your old address but the new tenants threw away your mail.

You may think the advice about how to stop it happening again is unhelpful. But actually it's not, if you don't listen to this advice it can easily happen again. Personally I know that forget things so I make sure they I put measures in place so that I can't forget!.

Nobody here is going to help you to reduce a legitimate fine. Hopefully the fine will stop you from making the same mistake in the future.
  • Takman it's not helpful to me as some are ignoring what I've already written. I've already told you:
1:) I put a calendar reminder for my next tax payment BEFORE posting on this forum & don't need further help setting up a calendar. 2:) I had DVLA on my list to notify of address when I moved & contacted them (for license) then crossed them off the list. 3:) I checked my mail at my old address for around 6 months. 4:) DVLA did not contact me after I updated my V5C in June & there is no evidence that they contacted me at my old address as I recovered letters from other senders but NOTHING from DVLA.

I've partially paid the fine & accept responsibility, but the DVLA are being unreasonable. I'm asking for advice with the excessive fee charged in this case. If this happened to any of you and they fined you £70000 by capturing you every day on your road would you agree? Would you be able to pay? Would a court tell you to sell your flat so you can go off & say, "it's ok I learnt my lesson. I won't forget anymore." Does this type of punishment fit the crime?

You didn't mention you had set a reminder until post #8 and that was after i had suggested it in post #6 so i still think it was a valid suggestion. Plus the fact that you have now set a reminder shows that you could have done this before and avoided the fines in the first place.

Comparing a £1800 fine to a £70000 fine is ridiculous as the amounts are so different!. You didn't get your first fine until 6 months after you had been driving with no Tax. Then you got roughly one a month which I think is fair considering that vehicle tax is done in monthly periods.

There is no way that you can say they didn't send you letters, they will have certainly sent you a reminder when your tax ran out. Plus you don't know what the person in your old flat threw away. To throw away someones else's letters is a stupid thing to do in the first place. Plus when you consider that you had been collecting them in the months before that makes it an even more stupid thing to do. So you have no idea how many letters were sent and this person threw away.

But to put it in perspective let's compare it to a parking fine. If you don't pay in a £1 car park you will get a £50 fine so 50 times the amount not paid. If we then consider that you car tax is around £100 let's say the fine is still only 18 times more than the non paid amount. So it's not that high after all!.

But if you want some useful advice send the DVLA a subject access request and you will get all the information they hold on you including every letter they have sent you. You will then know once and all if they sent you letters or not.
I wold say they have because whats the point of issue someone a fine and not telling them!.

Seriously telling people to set up a calendar is not useful. There are a million ways to remember something but none of it will help him. If you can't help with the problem at hand don't bother posting.
The huge fine will probably mean he never forgets again anyway.
