60 upfront cost 50.00 p/month 24 mths 5 gig data unlimited calls texts.
Plus 30.00 final iPhone 6 payment.
I chose iPhone 6 upgrade from iPhone 5 2 yrs ago as I wanted NFC/Contactless payments.
Here I am with £30 to pay and my existing IPhone 6 in excellent condition and running IOS10.
After watching Apple event, there's nothing techy wise with 7 to get a sale.
As other MSEr's have mentioned, I'll wait next Iphnone due 2017.
If wireless charging and nice modern OLED screen become available, that's when I'll be tempted to start a new purchase and contract via O2.
Hope you don't make a panic costly 'I want it decision' unless the dual camera and 1 meter waterprroof is useful to you.
I did have a nosey on the O2 website to see the cost of getting it on contract - not because I'd have got it but wanted to see. I think for me it was £65. Our contracts are currently around 43 for the two of us - I own my phone outright and husband has a contract phone. £65 a month!!!!! Thats more than my internet bill. In fact its 2 x my internet bill.Im surprised people who are into the technology in phones would even buy an iPhone!. The Galaxy S7 has wireless charging, an OLED screen, more ram and a much powerful processor than the latest iPhone.
Plus Android phones are not locked down like Apple phones so you can do a lot more with them that is really useful. Like connecting Bluetooth ODB adapters to read your cars fault codes to get real time data.
But I wouldn't spend £600+ on the latest phone because they arnt worth it (even on a contract). The only reason I have the S7 Edge is because I got a broken one for £15 and repaired it for £100, which is such a great deal I could keep it for 2 years and probably still make a profit!.
I love technology, I completely understand where people are coming from when they are happy with an older phone though.I'm the same. But I'm not tempted by it at all - in fact, I'm really peed off - whose stupid idea was it to put a fancy speaker in it? now the local idiots will be even more anti-social and annoying with their inability to use headphones in public!!
I have to say, I did succumb when the 6 came out, but you know what? My 6 still looks like new, and that big drop from a £50odd quid a month contract to around a tenner a month is pretty sweet. I admit that I love my phone, I was always a proper Apple geek, but, I'd like to love my current phone for at least another year, probably more (probably as long as it takes for them to make it obsolete...)Why does anyone allow themselves to be sucked in by advertising? It's called free will! Take some responsibility and stop blaming everyone else for your inability to exert it! Ye gods. Some of us record TV programmes for no other reason than that we have no patience with adverts and that is the only way to whiz through them; not because we are afraid of being sucked in but purely because we value our time.
I'm not sure if you are directing this at me or whether it's a general statement (if its at me then its not very helpful).
1) I would say recognising that I was going through a rough patch was taking responsibility.
2) Advertising is all about psychology. You know the top companies specifically employ psychoanalysts and the like? They have the best of the best working out how to get the brain to respond to their advertising.
I also record tv programmes because I have no patience with adverts however that doesn't mean I am not susceptible. If you have a brain (which I would hope you do) then you are at risk of being sucked in, even if you don't think you are. You might be able to resist it but subconsciously your brain is having a ball with adverts.Money money money.

All my ebooks are in the icloud drive and its so simple to read them on the ipad and pick up in the same place on my iphone. And then I can access all my docs on any device. Obviously its one of those things that once you've subscribed to the "lifestyle" it's hard to leave because you loose that functionality. It's easy to manage my sons ipad using family sharing etc. None of these things are "new", the ipads are Mini 2s and the Mac is maybe 2012? I don't think I could go back to Windows and in a sense theres no point me getting an android phone (have had one before). And well, I don't want to.

Obviously you realise that Windows computers and Android phones can do all that plus a lot more. But once you get stuck with Apple devices i understand how it's hard to switch to other devices because they are so locked down and they try and make it so these features don't work with other devices outside of Apple.
Like for example my printer can easily be setup to scan documents into my Dropbox account which is then accessible on every device I own. But it can't be setup to scan into iCloud!. Also stuff like media streaming I have a networked computer which I keep all my media files on and all my devices in my house such as playstations, PC's and phones can access and play this media. I know that with apple products you have to download third party software which doesn't fully support all this across any device. They want you to kit your home out with Apple TV's and not just use what devices you already have.
Apple are very good at releasing new products with features that are years behind their competitors but make out its new!, then people happily lap this up. They also hide the specs of their devices and don't compare them against the competition. Things like calling their phone CPU's names like A6 then releasing the A7 so people think "oh yeah I want that one because it's better" yet it's alot slower than the equivalent chip used in an Android phone. Just take their newest products the "Air Pods" a set of Bluetooth earphones. Just think of how long Bluetooth earphones have been out!. Yet they made a big deal about it being new and about how they removed the headphone socket to try and make out its something revolutionary. But in reality they are just expensive Bluetooth Earphones with just 5 hours of battery, how boring is that?.
So if you really want to stop feeling you need the latest Apple product just look at what they are compared to other companies offerings and you will see how basic they really are!.0 -
Abby, the comment was general, yes I have a brain, also free will so that, if I cannot afford something, itchyfeet, I do not buy it.
Since we are permanently skint, I buy very little beyond what is necessary to live, like food and paying utility bills. I do not and never have had a mobile phone because it would be a complete waste of money. There are two of us here; we have one desktop computer and one TV; that's it. We share nicely. I do not buy any item of clothing, not even a pair of socks, until two pairs have fallen to bits (I do draw the line at darning, so uncomfortable to wear. Darning? Google it!)
I have never in my life bought a single thing with a designer label on it because I believe they are all rip-offs.
I guess it could be a generational thing but just because you, itchyfeet, cannot believe anyone can resist adverts, does not mean no-one can; it just means you cannot and lack the intelligence to realise not everyone is the same as you. Central heating and double-glazing are still a luxury to me. Don't judge people you don't know from a bar of soap by your own standards... or at all, ideally. I am not judging you because I can't be bothered.0 -

I'm actually pretty much as good as it gets at resisting adverts. The reason I say no one is really rational is that I'm a social scientist and I have read the studies. The information costs are generally too high to make informed decisions, and everybody (yes, everybody) has cognitive biases that cause us to make bad decisions even when we have all the information.
What you describe is frugality, not an exertion of psychological prowess. Do you know the slogans of any brands? Congratulations, advertising has gotten to you. Have a preferred brand of baked beans/laundry detergent/toothpaste? Sucker, sucker, sucker.
My point is, spending within your means isn't evidence you're immune to advertising, or, more generally, are a rational actor. The "people just need to exert some self control like I do" crowd are kidding themselves that given a different set of circumstances they would only ever make "good" choices.0 -

I was very skeptical about Apple, till I bought a few of their products. They're much better than anything I had in the PC world. Macbook Air is perfect. MacMini a great option too. I still run Windows on both as most of my work is SQL Server and VS2015 (which are both great), but not keen on Win10.
The phone is good, but not miles ahead of Android, just works a bit nicer. The top Android and iPhones are similar prices now.
That said, don't see enough in the new iPhone to bother and the headphones thing is stupid.0 -

When Apple released the first few iPhones and the first few iPads they really set a new high standard for phones and tablets and I had an IPhone 3gs and an iPad 3 because of this.
But now Android have definitely taken the lead. The S7 Edge is have now is much more powerful than the IPhone 7. But things such as wireless charging means I can put my phone in the car holder and it will charge without messing with wires, the iPhone 7 really should have had this by now!.
But if your running Windows on a Mac Book Air then that is probably the best of both worlds for a portable and functional computer!.0 -
Ah, [STRIKE]Foxconn[/STRIKE]Apple, offering last year's hardware at tomorrow's prices
Mrs SPL eventually got her way and bought an iPhone (6S Plus 64GB in girly pink). It has the right logo on the back, and so she's happy... but I'm not.
I could write a very long rant about exactly how wrong-headed the Apple way is. But I'll simplify it: who in their right mind ships a phone without a file manager? And why should I have to use iTunes for everything?
Mrs SPL is happy enough to stream movies from the web, chat on the local whatsapp equivalent and take photos, but for anything less trivial, we'd have to outlay a small fortune to match even halfway the functionality built into my Huawei P9. And it's small enough that I don't look like this:0 -

I'm completely aware that phones like the S7 Edge is more powerful but I still don't like android. I've been back and forth, almost every time my contract expires I go buy an android phone and then decide I hate it. I've tried every make, I just like the simplicity of Ios. I did have an android tablet for ages and I do appreciate that I can download things straight to it - so I do miss that functionality. Wireless charging would be amazing and I can't understand why Apple haven't introduced that. Seems a no brainer to me!
I run windows via my work's VPN when working from home, and its fast on my macbook but was slow on my windows laptop.Obviously you realise that Windows computers and Android phones can do all that plus a lot more. I use plex for media streaming – all the files are saved on an external hard drive which is plugged into the Mac and then I can stream those to the TV. I used this when we operated by windows as well, I wouldn’t have just done it via network streaming. Why? Because I like the Plex interface – it displays it like a library and has all the metadata – makes it easier for my son to pick out what he wants to watch and I’m a fan of clean lines. I did used to have apple tv but I didn’t use it for media streaming so sold it and replaced it with a fire stick which I much prefer as we have amazon prime (or rather student amazon prime which is half price) and this has plex on it as well.
Despite my irrational desire to posses the newest phone, I think even I would have stopped at paying £150 for Bluetooth headphones that I would 100% lose one of. I have some that cost me £15 and work just fine!Money money money.

I can darn! Although by the time we get to that point, OH's socks are shredded and so no amount of darning would save them. My mother buys him 3 packs of socks for christmas and that lasts him most of the year.
I have been very good over the past few months and only bought clothing if I'm desperate. I found I was ruining shoes after a month (wide feet, its the way I walk etc) so I bought myself some crocs that are like ballet pumps. They are called Kadee's. Anyway - I've had these a year now and they now need replacing as I've warn the bumps away. I've tried good leather shoes etc from clarks but I just have such wide feet (although being overweight contributes). And with clothes, well I buy new pairs of leggings every couple of months, I live in them. I wear them to work. Also as I'm losing weight, I don't need to buy smaller tops at the moment as most of mine are long sleeved swing tops, so the thinner I get the looser they get but they don't look weird. I'm selling my bags and bags of clothes that I've bought on a whim on ebay to build up a clothing fund for when I finally do need to replace my wardrobe.Money money money.

I have an iPhone 6S for home and a Galaxy for work. I hate the Galaxy with a passion - I find it clunky to use, I cut people off accidentally, I seem to manage to change focus to other parts of the phone mid-call and spend ages faffing around trying to return to the call in progress. I love my iPad (got a new one in the summer to replace my old iPad 2 which was struggling a bit). On the other hand I really can't get on with OH's MacBook - I am a Windows girl.
I couldn't see much that would make me want to move from a 6 to a 7. I'll wait for the 8!
I use the phone more for apps (mostly GPS related) than calls.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans
