  • Being a truck driver is not an easy job, if you don't like them don't buy anything. Everything you purchase has, at some stage, been on a truck. I salute you truck drivers. There are good and bad of all road users so, allow a bit longer for your journey and stop moaning......

    Oddly enough, speaking of tractors, I had a similar experience with what appeared to be a Yeti driving an old Deere.

    I never said it was exclusively foreign lorry drivers that caused accidents nor that UK drivers were completely blame free.

    Lorry driver Danny Warby jailed over Wyton police officer crash death


    A lorry driver who fatally crashed into an off duty police officer's car has been jailed for six years.

    Det Con Sharon Garrett, 48, died in a five-vehicle collision on the A141 near Wyton, Cambridgeshire, in June 2014. Danny Warby, 28, of Runcton Holme, near King's Lynn, Norfolk, had opened a text message moments before his 13.6-tonne vehicle hit the officer's car.

    Warby had denied causing Mrs Garrett's death by dangerous driving but was convicted by a jury last month.

    He was also banned from driving for 10 years.

    During a nine-day trial, Peterborough Crown Court heard Warby had opened a text message one minute and six seconds before the crash.
    His vehicle crossed the white line in the centre of the road and clipped an oncoming lorry, showering two cars in debris, before crashing into Mrs Garrett's Renault Clio, which was in the oncoming line of traffic.

    Warby was driving at 53mph (85km/h) on a stretch of single carriageway restricted to 40mph (64km/h) for lorries at the time of the collision, the prosecution said.

    The court heard the delivery firm driver had numerous previous convictions including speeding and using a mobile phone while driving. In 2015, Warby was banned for a year for drink-driving.

    Mother of two Mrs Garrett was married to a fellow police officer and was on her way home from work at the time of the crash on 6 June.
    Her car crashed off the road and ended up in a field and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Sentencing Warby to six years in prison, His Honour Judge Stuart Bridge told him it was clear he had not learned anything from his previous court appearances.

    "Your driving in general was reckless and cavalier, and on this day it was deplorable," he said.

    "Mrs Garrett and her family have paid the ultimate price."

    Mrs Garrett joined Cambridgeshire Police in 1991 and served in a number of roles across the force, most recently investigating complex fraud offences in the Economic Crime Unit.

    In a statement released after Warby's conviction, her family said they remained "devastated" by her death.

    "Sharon was a fantastic mother who has been taken from her two young children in such tragic circumstances," they said.

    As someone who's driven hgvs, yes it can be frustrating I understand that and yes the driver on the inside could alow down but you'll never change it. This discussion happens a lot on the truck forums aswell.
    I wouldn't suggest slowing down too much in front of a lorry as if it was to rear end you then I doubt I need to explain the consequences. Amazes me how people moan about bad driving from others yet then suggest doing it themselves to justify the issue in the first place.
    You'll find they will probably both be on the cruise control which is why they don't slow down.
    Oh and it's 56 not 59.

    Where there's a traffic jam there nearly always is a HGV at the front of it

    I presume it's the same in Scotland, as that's what speed they tend to drive at on the M8 and M74 (when not in one of the many "temporary" 50MPH average speed camera zones).

    That may be the legal speed limit, but HGVs are also required by law to be fitted with a 90kmh/56mph speed limiter. It's hardly nonsense to quote the 56mph figure, as that's the only speed they can sustain for any distance other than a long downhill section.

    Then it does not make sense to give a legal limit of 60, then mechanically restrict to 56.

    I have on lots of occasions been in the centre lane of a motorway overtaking at 70-75 on my,(car), speedo and have had HGV's up my backside, where are the limiters then?

    No idea. Maybe they've illegally disabled the limiter. Maybe you're thinking of smaller vehicles that aren't required to be fitted with a limiter. I can't say this has ever happened to me, so maybe your speedo is reading way out.
