I need to get people's opinions on something please... I had a bit of a 'discussion' with my mam yesterday about the fact that I haven't decorated the house for a few years. The truth is it's far too much hassle for me and I get no pleasure out of it at all. Those of you that know me well know how busy I am all of the time and I've used this holiday to wind down a bit but not gotten much done. Is it the end of the world if I don't want to paint the house as long as it's clean? I feel a bit put out because the place does look shabby but I don't have masses of cash to throw at it, and definitely not the time or inclination so I would have to pay someone to do it. It's knocked my confidence a bit to be honest.
    Have a good day everyone...

Decorating doesn't have to be expensive. Also you don't have to decorate a whole room. Wall stickers (£1.99 at B&M) / stencils/ feature walls can make a big difference to how it looks at minimal cost.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
  • CCL I'm gonna be a sheep and go with the general consensus! I think it's your house & your life do what you jolly well want to! My brother spends all of his time decorating. He literally finishes the whole house and then starts again. But he's very practical & skilled, he enjoys it and it's really his hobby (he doesn't drink, go out or socialise very much). I often wonder if he didn't like the way he did it as he does it so much! Us we chose a decor we liked (everything is white - we're very minimal!) and won't re-do it again for years probably! Our kitchen needs a repaint as we had a leak from the bathroom. But as everything is white and there's not much stuff to put away when we have time, inclination and money it's just a lick of paint.

In the end we don't have to meet anyone else's standards, you decide for yourself how you live your life. It's the beauty of being an adult :D

  • Also if you want it done but it's the effort involved might be an idea to save to pay someone to do it. Although it's expensive it'll be done in no time with minimal work yourself x

ccl ultimately as everyone has said its up to you, however, whatever you decide I wouldn't be borrowing to do it. We're like determined - we have white, that way you can easily touch up and it's cheap. You can also change it around cheaply if we so wanted.

We've had a good day. Finally got up in loft and got 6 boxes of clothes down to sort. One done ready to go back up, other 5 for selling :T also sorted dd2 drawers, so that was a bit more.

Sewed up two items rather than replace, also final sewed all of dd1 rainbow badges on :o

Girls had 'picnic' for tea aka lots of little bits from fridge, ham, cheese, grapes etc...

Still need to make DD sandwich for tomorrow but that'll only take 2 minutes. Listed another item on fleabay I found in loft. Was identical to one I sold before so I was able to reuse listing :D

Weather did brighten up in the end and I got 5  loads of washing dried, half put away too :D
  • Thank you all SO much for making me feel a million times better, and putting my mind at rest. I'm really grateful to you all. :grouphug: I don't think the house is bad, and ultimately I will save up and pay someone to decorate - but it's not high on my priority list at all. I just have this constant feeling I'm being judged by people and I need to be reassured that my own decisions are ok. I'm full of insecurity and self doubt at the best of times, and my own mother discussing 'the state of my home' with me doesn't help. I love her to bits, but she (and my sister) are decorate-the-house-every-year types. I'm not. I'm safe, warm and dry and that's enough for me. :D
We didn't go out in the end today so I have bagged myself an unexpected nsd, I thought we would be off out for lunch and a walk but when ds and dh got home from the football tournament, dh went back to bed and I haven't seen him since. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing - he's either really tired, or getting ill. Hopefully just tired.

I will try and get on tomorrow but I'm off to the Lakes with the kids - early start.

    Evening all :)
Thanks for starting the new thread PF - you had an early start for a BH!
Got back from our camping trip at about lunchtime
    Unpacked vehicle
    Did washing
Dried some of it on the line
Used up some of the food we brought back with us for lunch and dinner
Sold 5 items on ebay over the weekend - packing and posting tomorrow!
Picked tomatoes, courgettes, raspberries, mangetout, and DH picked a carrier bagful of French beans, which were donated to a neighbour who was pleased to have them (though probably not as pleased as I was to get rid of them :rotfl:) We only have some plants in 2 big pots, we eat them most days - luckily we do like them - and there are loads in the freezer. I have also made a batch of bean chutney!
Walked dog, who enjoyed his weekend away so much that he has hardly left the sofa :rotfl:
Had to pop to corner shop to buy some bread and milk, far fewer temptations in there than in the supermarket!

CCL, we haven't decorated for more than 5 years, and I have no inclination to do it again any time soon! Not minimalist here at all - I am a antiques /vintage dealer, I love old stuff and have lots of it  but we have shades of white / off white too. Bog standard brilliant white in kitchen and main bathroom, bog standard cream for the hallway, landings and stairs (we have lots of stairs) and I splashed out on F*rrow and Ball for the lounge / dining room and bedrooms / ensuite. Bits that look particularly mucky get a scrub when I notice them, that is it! Definitely a shabby chic vibe going on here :rotfl:

Early night for me I think, as there will be A LOT on tomorrow's list

Like many on here all our walls (except bathrooms which are tiles) and ceilings are painted white, the skirting boards, internal doors, wooden window frames & architraves are cream, the floors are stone or wood. Colour is from curtains, cushions, bedding throws etc. We only decorate as necessary and definitely not because other people feel we should. I need to find time toggive the place a good scrub but I know once I do it will look so much better.
