  • Do tomatoes count as a veg or a fruit? I've been counting them as veg, but technically they're a fruit, aren't they?

    This is getting complicated now...

Technically anything containing seeds is a fruit so aubergine, cucumber, courgette, beans, peas, pumpkin, squashes and avacado are also fruits.

From a culinary point of view I would be more concerned about sugar content.

My note to self for the day being:

    https://cookingwithplants.com/author/anja/

I saved this webpage some time back and don't know why I've not got round to trying anything by her yet. But her recipes are heavily plant-based (being vegan) and they all look both delicious and easy (which is more than can be said for many vegan recipes I've come across...).

So - must get trying some of them....
I looked at this with interest, but tbh it's not for me as a lot of her recipes involve sweet ingredients. For me eating more dairy and fruit and veg in their natural form works out better.

I'd like to join, really have to make sure that I get my five a day. Three servings of veg are no problem most days, but since I often forget to each fruit or veg in between I often don't reach 5.

ABout the tomato thing, I do count them as veg because it is savoury. They have less sugar than for example carrots...

Today went very well, 4:2 I would say
I had half a cucumber, half a pepper, a lot of tomatos and a big bowl of carrots and parsnip with some canned black salsify

Plus half a small melon and some plums

Peach for breakfast (1), beans, broccoli, carrots for lunch (2) - I get seriously irritated by how little veg people cook when I'm eating away from home, as I cook as much for myself as they do for 4 or even more, fennel (3), peppers (4) and lentils (5) for supper. Maybe I should go and eat some tomatoes before bed.

Another dismal day here! I had a 3-portion helping of stewed apples swimming in cream, and aside from tea and coffee, nothing else: 0:3

I can't say that tomorrow looks much brighter. I have a dental appointment followed by dinner so am guessing it will be very vino-focused. I have however taken stock of the realms of veg in my fridge. It's still perfectly edible, I just need to create an opportunity to eat it this week :o

Good, I will continue to count tomatoes as veg. I have to count carrots, courgettes, aubergines etc as veg or I'll have no veg to count at all...

Today was a joke. Lunch was chocolate mousse with hazelnuts and raspberries, dinner was turkey pesto with potatoes (not sweet). I don't think there was enough of anything to count as a portion of veg. We just finished eating about 20 minutes ago... one of those days.

So my total today was 0:2 .

  • Just found this - which should be handy for "visual" people like myself:

    https://www.thekitchn.com/10-photos-that-show-you-your-daily-recommended-servings-of-fruits-vegetables-207261

Will go back for a proper look at it now. Quick glance indicates it's the old "5 a day" being shown. I can never remember whether the guidelines have been amended to 7, 8, 9 or 10 a day. I just recall it's been upped from 5.

So - if I think "Right - make that 2 pictures worth a day from that" or instance that should do me.

That sounds good! I was on the verge of getting rid of all my lentil supplies but pulses are an easy way of getting one of the "veggie" portions. This recipe looks good if using a very small amount of olive oil rather than the 1/4 cup  recommended.

    Casserole, toms, onions, garlic,butterbeans, olives

Served with rice and broad beans

So perhaps with a fair wind, 4 portions
