I have a battery @f0xh0les. It's lovely ... but the ROI isn't really there unless you have lots of powercuts/need to ensure no interruption of supply. I have it because I work from home with no access to a local office, and need to be online. I'm just having yet more solar installed on the remaining south-facing roof and the west-facing bit and am looking forward to having negative energy bills for even more of the year!

I am never going to have negative energy bills but the pleasure of the last week of using less than 3kWh from the grid when my previous average was 20kWh definitely puts a smile on my face.  Actually what I have exported in this week will actually make my bill negative but it is never going to be the norm.  There were a couple of dire days last winter when they didn't even generate 1kWh, but also some this week over 30.  I only used to notice if the weather was hot or cold, now I wonder if it is sunny even if it is cold/windy.  Now I am set up properly when we get to the lower output months I will be looking at filling my battery during the night on the cheap rate to use during the day.  When really desperate looking at filling the battery early afternoon to cover the 4-7pm even higher rate energy charge.

It certainly takes some getting used to @badmemory, but I'm less worried about the winter now I realise that a good summer is likely to completely offset it. Although a bad year will still cost. I've put the extra on primarily because it's the right thing to do based on average use - I'm a fairly low user - and it also means that if I get a heat pump or EV at some point then I've pre-paid the electricity with the solar installations. Doing it now means no one messing about on the roof/going into the attic after this.

Phew - caught up, took me a few weeks to read through !

Solar - I get 15p per kWh from octopus so I charge my battery whenever it’s below 15p (agile pricing)
