They load balances. You can get cards that say £10, £25 etc but that doesn't necessarily reflect the amount on the card, hence why the receipt should be kept with them.
Confirmation here if you're still unsure.
So OP, what do the receipts state?0 -

As far as I am aware they give an in store returns policy of 28 days.0 -
In my opinion the OP is at fault for not checking the expiry date or making them self aware that an expiry date exists.
JDS is right in not accepting your expired gift cards and they are under no obligation to compensate you, it is the op's fault for not knowing the cards had an expiry date, ignorance is not an excuse.
As for bad customer service, just because you didn't get what you wanted and the staff followed company policy that makes for bad customer service? I think not.
The mistake was made by the OP and they have to swallow the consequences.0 -

That is not a JD Sports gift card although it can be used in there.

UPDATE
Just to let you know that it is always worth fighting for what you believe is right. Today I have received a full refund PLUS expenses, because the cards do not an expiry date on them.
The only real worry is I had to take the matter to Small Claims Court in order for them to accept responsibility for their incorrect advice. It doers mean though, that instead of paying out £30.00, their final bill to me is £61.30 - on top of their costs of referring it to their legal team.0 -

Please see my update. OP was not at fault and I think yes to bad service. The mistake was not made by me and JD have to swallow the consequences.
It just shows when you know something feels unjustified you should speak out and not worry about what others say as they could be wrong.0
