I still don't understand why your mum needs three bedrooms. Can't you downsize to a smaller three bedroom house?

And can the Op not move out and pay her own rent and bills?

Can your wife not earn more so you don't have to give her pocket money?

Each and every family is different

To come on here calling parents profiteers is highly offensensive

I shall now tell me mum to piddle off and find her own home, pay her own mortgage ( ages of 78 she's bound to get one) maintain the place and feed, heat and clothe herself

Cos I'd hate to think I'm profiteering of her, at the cost of £600 a year her share of rates and £400 a year for the lecky.

Hmmm 1000*12 = !!!! me, £83 a month. Must put it up so I can profiteer

Its strange that you don't seem to realise that if you charge someone rent you are making money from that person.

They said board, how arethey making money. Rent, council tax, food, heating, water, sewage, Internet, electric it goes on and all costs money. It's not free as far as I'm aware. Adults normally contribute to a household.

NO you are NOT. Because they are costing you money by being there.

So if parents don't charge their ADULT children 'board' money, then the ADULT child is profiteering from the parent.

    Comprendez?

You are making a profit from someone only if there is some of the money they pay you left after you have covered the costs they incur.

In the vast majority of cases, board paid by adult children doesn't even cover the extra cost to the parent of their presence, never minding leaving a surplus (profit!) on top.

    Put your hands up.

I don't give my wife pocket money. Where did you get that from?

On the other thread about finances I explained that our money went into a joint pot which we used to pay the bills etc. We then give ourselves an equal amount of money to spend on what we like. If you find that unreasonable please tell me why?

I'm still confused by your situation. You said if your mother didn't live with you then you would live in a two bedroom house. Yet because your mum does live with you, you live in a five bedroom house. I just don't understand why!

I'm sorry if you find it offensive but it is profiteering. I find it equally offensive that the fact I don't charge my son rent is a terrible thing to do....

I provide a accommodation and food free of charge.

I don't provide anything else so my son is perfectly aware that things aren't free in the real world.

You don't need to get money off your child for them to learn they have to pay for things.

And you have an adult child who's prepared to let you do that? Not something I'd boast about in your position.:(

Board is just a polite word for rent to salve the parents conscience

Of course the child is profiteering from their parent. They get to live for free in the house. It's my son and I am more than happy for this to happen as I am a lot wealthier than him.

If my son was the person who won £60 million quid yesterday I would suspect I would profit from this as he would now be significantly wealthier than me. It's what families do. Those with more money help out those with less money. The fact people seem to think this is wrong says a lot for the state of your family relationships.

That must have been interesting. Did you enjoy the issue with the burger I got from McDonald's?
