How much rent should my parents charge me?

  • 20% would be fine if you earned a decent wage but you don't, in your 30's its not fair to expect your parents to carry you financially because you earn a low wage.

£50 seems cheap, I think the problem is your lack of earnings and desire to save rather than your mothers rent demands.

I had anxiety, i probably still do in a very minor way, the worst thing you can do is avoid your problems, you need to confront your problems and deal with them. The more you avoid them the bigger the problem becomes, fear feeds anxiety issues.

I pay £30 to get my haircut, and I go every 8 weeks because I have extremely short hair which starts to grow out. I've gone for years without having my hair cut at all at times.

At the moment I'm not putting any money into savings at all, because I can't afford to and don't have the spare cash.

I know £50 isn't a lot. If I was on a full time wage then I would expect to pay more and I have in the past. I do pay my way, and have paid rent to my parents in the past. I have also lived away from home and paid rent in shared houses before. I haven't always lived at home. When I was at uni I paid my own way, even paid my own fees for a year I also had two jobs at the time as well.

The whole reason I moved back home was that we agreed that it was pointless me moving out and trying to save money. The whole idea of me being here was so I could save money. I don't have any debts, I don't have any credit cards. Any money I've borrowed from my parents in the past I paid back, with interest!

Yes £50 isn't a lot but when my wage is £480 a month, it's over 40% of my wage.

But paying £50 a week is saving you money! If you lived in a shared house then your rent, bills etc would cost a lot more than that.

£7/day inc. all utilities, use of white goods and car hire as and when you need it is an absolute bargain.

I know it might sound strange, but your Mum is helping you by charging a fair rent. She's getting you use to having to pay your own way when you're out in the real world alone.

I am 35, I've lived away from home on numerous occasions and paid my own way in the real world. Before I had anxiety I worked full-time. I've also worked full time jobs with anxiety and been extremely ill whilst doing them. I've been trying very hard to find a good work life balance that doesn't make me ill.

I'm not sure a lot of people here have had experience of anxiety. I'm not talking about nerves a little now and then. I'm talking about crippling anxiety and panic attacks. Panic attacks several times a day that leave you shaking and freaking out. One's where you can't leave the house. I was once agoraphobic for several months and worked extremely hard to get over that. Forgive me if I don't want to go back to feeling like that every single day. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Your actual problem is you can't afford to save and not you cannot afford to pay your parents a fair rent.

Yes, because it was the only one I've seen so far that I could get to without a car, and that I have experience in and is more hours.

No point me applying for jobs that are more hours but less money. Which would equal more bus fares so I'd be worse off rather than better.

I only started looking for different jobs yesterday as the changes to my contract have only been a recent thing within the last couple of weeks.

For over a year now i've cut my own hair. I'd never done it before. I paid less than £30 for an electric trimmer on Amazon and watched things on YouTube to see how it works, now i'll trim my hair a little every week or two. If you've only got short hair you'd find it dead easy. And if you have anxiety, and nervous about going out, you'll not even have to visit the hairdresser.

£50 a week is cheap, I have grown up children I don't expect to have to subsidise them even the one that is bipolar.
Stop having your hair cut, it's not essential,
Life can be tough, BGKO and get on with it.
