The other way you can use up lose change easily is with the self-service tills at supermarkets.
Even if you don't have enough change for the bill it is worth doing.

Say, for example, your bill is 99p and you have a pound coin and 98p in coppers.
You would normally hand over the pound coin and get a penny change. And you'd end up with 99p in coppers.
At the self-service checkout, put in all the coppers first. The machine will say you've got 1p to pay. Put in your pound coin. The machine will give you 99p change - but it will do so in the most efficient way rather than giving you back all your coppers.

Think I have been behind you in the queue.
  • I used a Coinstar machine this morning. I counted the money before I left home and reckon I had just over £170 in my bag. I tried to take it to the bank but they would only take 5 bags of coins per day so had to resort to Coinstar in my local supermarket. I tipped the coins in which to a while & to my horror the balance was £109.61. Deduct the fee and I ended up with £99.85!!!!! I tried to complain in the supermarket and was told I had to call coinstar. I did and whilst they initially tried to fob me off they are investigating the machine. Now I know some coins may weigh slightly less than they are supposed to but those should have been dropped back to me. I didn't mind the fee but to con me out of £60 is just plain wrong. I now have to wait 5-7 business days for the machine to be audited. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment but will update in a week or so.

Did it not give you the option of giving your money back? I've never used these machines, but I would expect it to have that option.

I used the coinstar Machine yesterday. I counted about £484.00. out of my large whisky bottle that i had been saving for 3 years and didnt count all the coppers So when the machine said £388.00 then paid me out 354 after there percentage was taken which i didnt mind because it tells you before you start but to loose nearly £100 or more i was in shock. Then i couldnt find the phone number on the machine and didnt even complain but now i have been trying to find a phone number on the coinstar website no luck so can you please tell me the number so i can ask them to investigate this

you don't put it in coin by coin like other supermarkets self service tills, it has a hopper in morrisons and you can just dump a hand full of change in.

Don't forget, many Barclays branches also have these coin-sorter machines as well. As a double-bonus, if you have online banking you can get a 3-PC license for Kaspersky 2012 and a single-user license for the mobile version for nowt as well.
Adding-up the above, thats £50 worth of software free and no charges for depositing your coins.

I'd also be interested in knowing this.

I'm going to pop into both branches today (the one near the market square and the one near broadmarsh!) to see if they have one.

The one closest to Sport Direct and Victoria Centre has a coin machine
