Just throwing this out there;
If you knew someone was committing benefit fraud, would you report them?

Why are you 'just throwing this out there'?chelseablue wrote: »Just throwing this out there;

In my experience, threads such as these - whether posted on the Benefits board or Discussion Time - generate violent opinions.
Why does it matter what anyone else would do?
Why not do what you think is right?0 -
Are you committing Benefit Fraud Op, are you wondering what are your chances of getting away with it, or will someone blow-you-up.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Hi Pollycat
Im in too minds what to do to be honest, so for me it helps to get other people's opinions on what they would do and why.
I guess fraud is fraud and should be reported, just the repercussions could be big for the people involved0 -

I think you needed to put context to your question.chelseablue wrote: »No it's not me, but it is someone I'm related to
For example, someone may report a colleague or neighbour but not a relative.
Someone may report a cousin but not a sibling or parent.
Shouldn't breaking the law have big repercussions?chelseablue wrote: »I guess fraud is fraud and should be reported, just the repercussions could be big for the people involved
If you are working and paying tax and NI, aren't you yourself funding this benefit fraud?
It is, after all, the money that the Government is taking from you that is being paid to benefit claimants.0 -

Very true, yes I do work full time and pay Tax and NI, I would much rather my money go to someone with a genuine claim, such as someone too ill or disabled to work0 -

I know what I would do.
The money they are claiming could be used for other claimants who need it.0 -
It would depend entirely on the circumstances. If a neighbour was signed off sick but occasionally took in a bit of ironing and got paid cash in hand - no, I wouldn't report it.
If a neighbour was signed off sick because of a bad back but was working as a circus acrobat at the weekends...that would be different.
But you don't always know the circumstances of other peoples lives as well as you think, so I would never report anyone unless I knew for certain what they were doing.0
