Just to reinforce a point on the last link on Gers posting - if you are wanting to change your name back to your maiden name after a divorce, you can do this without any legal formality because legally you never "lose" your original surname. You may need to provide a copy of your decree absolute along with your birth certificate to evidence your renewed use of the old name, but there is no need for a formal change of name deed in this particular circumstance.

(May not be relevant here but someone else might find the info useful)

Thanks, very useful to know:) - I am divorced and don't want to keep my married name and I was never fond of my maiden name so I am thinking of changing it to something totally different. I can't get my head round how simple it seems (and cheap) - one thing I have noticed is that most organisations want "legal copies" if the original cannot be sent. I would rather keep the original and use copies for sending out but that is the only bit that seems expensive, getting the legal copies. Anyone know how this can be done inexpensively?

Either your solicitor or bank can make you copies. They then stamp them to make them legal copies. It will depend on their individual policy how much they charge.

    smeeinnit -

I have literally changed my name within the last 48hrs. I used ukdp.co.uk.

Filled in the online form, and then selected extra legal copies of the deed. The first copy is £13.00, and the remaining ones (if bought at the same time) are £1.00 each. (thats cheap).

It saves the time when you have to send the docs off to bank, insurance etc etc to change details.

I ordered my docs at 9am monday and had them delivered tuesday morning - ive signed, had them countered and posted them back - the copies should be here no later than thursday - simple.

Oh - also, if your worried about legalities of the docs. i took the liberty to call the passport office and DVLA - both confirmed that they accept from the company. hope it helps

(all in for original, 4 copies, and extra postal it cost about £50 all in)
