If you are on certain benefits you can get it done for a much discounted price.... or you could a few years ago - I would check up on that though because I am not quite sure.

  • Hi, sorry if this in the wrong forum.
Im currently looking into changing to my surname for myself and if they agree to the other members of my immediate family.
I'd just like to know if you did it how did it go.
I know you to do it by deed poll and that you must inform every organisation you use with that name.
Whats it like cost wise? Is it a lot of hassle or can it be done in a few days? Is it best to make a list of all the places that use your name?
Was there anywhere in particular that was difficult or where it costs extra?

    Any advice appreciated
  • I changed mine about a year ago but only recently changed all my docs over (money and all that ). If you put 'deed poll' in the seach on here it brings up a few threads. I dont think its a legal requirement to tell anyone you have changed your name but for things like passports/driving licences etc you need a deed poll.

I bought mine off a guy on ebay for £3.50 with free postage:money:and got my college tutor to sign it. I took it into my bank and they changed my account name over and I'm waiting for my new card:T

I've just sent off my passport as well so I'll let you know how that goes xx
  • That doesnt sound too bad. Does it matter who has to sign it? Can it just be any witness? Or does it have to be a professional?
Did it cost you anything regarding the bank change?
  • nothing at the bank :-) they just wanted to see my original ID (passport) and the signed document.

No it doesnt need to be anyone professional, just not someone at the same address as you x
  • Sounds good. Thanks. Let me know how it goes with the passport

I changed mine via the internet... cost me about 9 quid and OH's mate witnessed it for me.

Changed my credit card, work documentation and one of my bank accounts with no problems at all.

The issue with other family members may be more complicated, if they are under 18. over that age they can do what they like.
