Having actually done this, I assure you that you don't need to pay anything at all!
Go to your local Citizens Advice, tell them what you want to do - they will advise you - and at least when I did this - they did not charge me a penny!0 -

Complete the form below, deleting the red italics and inserting your new and old names accordingly. Sign the document using black ink, with both your new signature AND your old signature, where indicated. You must do this even if your signature remains the same.
The person witnessing the name change must also sign the form in the space provided, using black ink. Note: the witness must actually witness you signing the Deed Poll in your old and new names.
The witness can be anyone over the age of 18 provided that s/he is not directly related to the person changing his or her name. The witness must also add his or her name, address, and occupation where indicated.
You will need several copies of the Deed Poll, and many organisations require a certified copy. Various professionals can certify copies for you, including solicitors, teachers, GP's. Make sure the wording is correct otherwise it will be rejected, if in doubt ask the organisation concerned for their preferred wording.
Once Deed Poll is completed it can be sent to the Passport Office, DVLA, and all companies and organisations, which hold your personal details, (Banks, Electricity/Gas/Water supplier, employer etc.); to provide evidence of your name change so that stored records can be changed to reflect the name change.DEED POLL

Hi Jason.
You need to sign the form with your new signature and also with your old signature.
You must sign it in front of someone who is over 18 and not related to you in any way (this includes relatives by marriage). That person must then sign the form and enter their details as the Witness.
That is all you need to do to change your name. You need to keep that document safe as that is your proof that you no longer use the name on your birth certificate, so if you were asked to produce your birth certificate for any reason you would need to show both documents.
But many organisations, such as your bank for example, want a 'certified copy' to put on their file, that is a photocopy that has been certified by a professional person (such as a teacher or doctor, for example) as being a true copy of the original.
I hope this explains things more clearly?
Regards

Changing a child's name by Deed Poll
Changing a child's name is a relatively simple process. Provided everyone with Parental Responsibility consents to the child’s change of name a parent can apply for a ‘Deed Poll’ which is a legal document that provides proof that a child’s name has changed. This document can then be used to get all official records updated and the child’s passport amended to show their new name. Any part of a child’s name can be changed, and names can be removed or added providing that the change is not being carried out for fraudulent or deceitful purposes. Before making any applications we strongly advise that you read the information below thoroughly.
Children aged 16 to 18
Children between the age of 16 and 18, must apply for their own Adult Deed Poll, and do not need to seek the consent of those holding parental responsibility for them.
I found this on UKDP website. This is what I used to change my name, not too sure about doing it by yourself. I got a stamp on mine so it looked official and was accepted for passport, bank account and driving licence:j little fire cracker born 5th November 2012 :j0 -

If by 'old' you mean someone who is no longer teaching, then no, they can't do it because the person has to be a currently practicing professional person.
But the person doesn't have to know you (or in this case your daughter). They are just certifying that the photocopy is an accurate copy of the original. If it is just for college they may not even need a certified copy. If she takes the original into college, they may be happy to take a photocopy themselves - if they do need a certified copy there will be plenty of teachers floating around who can sort that out for her.
What she should NOT do, though, is leave the original with them as it is a legal document.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Could I ask a question, what if you want to change the spelling of the name, everything else remains the same sound of name and signature etc.Mortgage

just to clarify - you can call yourself anything you like, you just have to let people know that from now on this is the name you wish to be known by. there is no legal requirement to complete a deed poll.
However, many organisations insist on a Deed Poll, such as banks and passport office, for example.
So it depends what you want to do. If you just want to be known by a different name at college, that may not be an issue. Having said that, if you are taking exams, you may have to give your national insurance number as identification, which of course will identify you under your original name unless you have taken formal steps to change your name for tax and NI purposes.I'm a retired employment solicitor.
