a quick appointment with a solicitor and £50 lighter was all it took for my hubby. you get certified copies of the change so you can change your driving licence/passport etc.

I was in exactly the same position as you, my daughter had my partners surname and I was a bit embarassed by it when she went to school and the doctors etc. We have no intention of getting married but are commited to each other anyway. I did it all online using this company http://www.ukdps.co.uk/ it only cost me £34 and I was able to change my passport, driving licence and bank accounts with it so it must be legitimate. It only took about a week for the forms to come in after I put my details in online. I just had to get someone who wasn't a relation to me to witness it and it was ready. Most companies were willing to accept a photocopy for verification. HTH.

    I am in UK.
I really want to get this done i.e. change my first name , been meaning to dit for ages to the name that everyone really calls me. As i see it i have 2 choices do it :
    1. type letter myself and get someone who has know me for 2yrs+ to certify it.
    2. use http://www.ukdps.co.uk/ServicesAndFees.html

If i do it myself, how do i make certified copies? As i understand that the passport agency, DVLA, banks etc all require to see the originals - please correct me if i am wrong.
Therefore, is it best to get my witness to wet sign 3 copies - is this allowed?

(if i go for option 2 the charge is £54 with 3 legal certified copies!)

If you are in Scotland you can legally change your name by just deciding to call yourself someting else. There is no need to change it by Deed Poll. All you do is write to the Registrar in Edinburgh and tell them your new name. No charge.

We just changed our daughters surname as school wouldnt accept her new name as it wasnt legal. We had to pay nearly £50 through the registrar of Edinburgh. They said we couldnt have her just known as her new name -we had to have a new birth certificate .
TRYING hard to be a good money saver

thanks for link very useful, except it says 2 signatures are required. i am sure reading somewhere it said one signature from someone who has know me over 2year is all.

if anyone can shed any light on this to clarify?

also found this website which is actually very good as it lets your print out a pretty good certificate. Flaw is that it only allows 1 witness signature whereas on a Deed Poll is needs 2witnesses (when i checked with legal advice online)

DAK how to inform DVLA? Online it says a new D1 form. But other online advice says just complete section 6 of your license and post back......any clues as i am confused.
DOH! Forget this post - made a mistake between the vehicle reg form and driving license! I do need a D1 form!
