There was a lot said about marriage vs cohabitation, and very little in favour of cohabitation, at least if you live in England or Wales. One of the speakers made the point that people think they gain some of the rights and privileges of marriage by living together, owning property together, having children together, but it doesn't seem to be the case.
It's highly irresponsible to have children and no will, and this is especially the case if you choose not to marry. Same goes for life assurance.

Hi just wondering if anyone can advise me of a possible cheap/ or free way to change my name by deed poll,
I changed it years ago after splitting with a very violent ex, but I now want to go back to my birth name, actually would I have to change my name by deed poll as I am going to my birth name.
Also I changed my sons name at the same time, but have since lost all the letters/ change of name deeds etc, any advice on what I can do? I did contact the solicitors where I had it done but the no longer have copies of it. would I have to effectively change his name again?
thank you for reading and for any advise you may haveWINS of 2008 :j

Hi there,
I'm a bit hazy but I thought you could be known by whatever name you wished. When I got divorced I just went back to my maiden name without any paperwork at all. I think if it's a totally different name then you do need paperwork though. Your son may need it doing legally. Hopefully someone else more helpful will be along soon.
ps. well done for ditching the violent ex.Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early0 -
thanks for that.
and can I just say a belated congratulations, what beautiful baby, she's gorgeous, and what a lovely name, makes me all broody, (although I'm single so not much chance for me at the moment)

I changed mine 3 years ago with ukdps http://www.ukdps.co.uk/ServicesAndFees.html
It cost me £34 and I did it online. Not sure how it would work with your son as I think you need permission from his father to change his name. I may be wrong about that but after I had a massive argument with my OH I looked into changing daughters surname to mine and he would have had to give permission for me to do it. thanks for the info,
will have al ook at that site in the morning.
I have already changed my son's name (about 8 years ago) but I've lost the deeds, and can't get copies from the solicitor would did it at the time, so I'm not sure if I'd have to change it from his birth name again to the one he has used for the past 8 years, as though I'd never changed it, if you know what I mean.
when I did it 8 years ago I didn't need permission from his father as we weren't married, which rightly or wrongly meant that he had no say at all in anything, I believe that has since changed, so don't know where I would stand now.WINS of 2008 :j

I really want to share the same name as my partner and baby son but not worried about getting married, has anyone else done this succesfully and how long does it take?? Also is it easy??
Thank you in advance0 -
I did this when I divorced my husband. The solicitor I consulted told me that I can call myself anything I want as long as I wasn't impersonating anyone (Mickey Mouse for example, not that that appealed anyway but you get my drift!)
The only reason I did it through the legal system was that the passport office were the only authority that insisted on some legal documentation. Maybe things have changed since, dunno, you'd have to check it out or someone will come along with more info.
Took about half an hour to get the document from my solicitor, THEN you've got all the palaver of informing banks etc afterwards!
Hope this helps'The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes'

If you are in Scotland you can legally change your name by just deciding to call yourself someting else. There is no need to change it by Deed Poll. All you do is write to the Registrar in Edinburgh and tell them your new name. No charge.0
