Changing Name By Deed Poll questions (merged)

I have thought about a child taking both names, but don't think that is a solution. First of all when the child had a child, that child would then take on four second names, two from each parent not really pratical.
And it would also mean that children with different fathers, and the same mother would have different names.
I wouldn't like my personal buisness know in public.
And what about the child who doesn't have a fathers name to take ,again it would be know automatically by others because ,they didn't have a double barred name.
There is no ideal solution but in a society where lone parenting by the mother is prevelant ,and mothers still do most of the child care ,I think it's best to take on the mothers name.0 -
Hiya
I have been in this situation myself.
1st marriage changed name to "apple" had two children Miss n master "apple"
Got divorced
Re-married
If I took new hubbys name would be Mrs "pear"
I didnt want to have different name from my children so became (wait for it! lol) Mrs "apple-pear".
I then had children with new hubby.
They were known as Miss n Master "Pear" so now I had 2 apples and 3 pears! but the good thing was I had both their surnames!
Eventually my eldest two wanted to become "pears" too, so rather than do a name change by deed poll I just wrote to everyone in authority (tax man, national insurance, doctor, school etc) stating:
To whom it may concern
As of xx/xx/xx date please note the following:
Miss apple, born xx/xx/xx and Master apple, born xx/xx/xx and myself, Mrs Apple-pear, born xx/xx/xx will now been known solely as Miss, Master and Mrs Pear
Please amend your records accordingly.
I hope this helps.
You do not have to do name changes by deed poll, legally you can call yourself whatever you like as long as it isnt for fraudulent/crminial reasons and notify the relevant authorities so you can save yourself a few bob there too!

I did this when I married and wanted my son to have my married name. It was never any trouble until he wanted a passport so he went to CAB and they arranged for him to sign a statement in front of a magistrate and this was enough for any legal requirements - didn't cost a penny either.0 -
Hi skeating86. Have a look here - I've been looking at this site:
http://www.ukdps.co.uk/ServicesAndFees.html
has anyone any experience with this site?
Going to go with Ms Vyvyan Apple. Have decided to aim for the New Year as a target.
I have used these recently (withing the last month) and it came back all done within a week. I have used the document to change the name on my passport, driving license and banks etc all succesfully. There is also an option when you complete the forms to do a change of title too.
Hope this helpsBaby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Thanks iceicebaby. A couple of questions.....
Who did you use as a witness? I was wondering about using a friend of mine (known me for many years) but she's not a 'professional' is that ok?
Also do I need lots of official copies for all the organisations that need to be informed? - if so - it looks like a lot of copies to me! A few for bank accounts, credit cards all the other things with my name and address on it basically. Do all the utilities need them? and my car registration document, driving licence, car insurance etc...0 -
I used a colleague from work, not a professional! As long as they are not a relative or partner and are over 18 then anyone is ok.
I needed the original or certified copies for passport, dvla, banks and credit cards. (You can order certified copies from them for a small extra cost) I sent them off to passport and dvla and credit cards but for my bank accounts I just popped into the branches and they took photocopies of the original and stamped and signed the copy and sent it to wherever to be processed. I then had new cards etc within a week.
Utilities and BT accepted a photocopy of the original
Car insurance took my change over the phone (after first asking if I had changed my driving license)

A friend changed her name back to her maiden name but didn't have to do this by deed poll as this was her name on her birth certificate.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
