An adult only needs to state that he wishes to be known as ***** and from then on that is his name.

There is no need to involve anyone else or any legal involvement at all. ( Provided it is not done for any illegal purpose or fraud )
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • I've just got married and want to take DH's surname, but keep my maiden name as a middle name. Apparently if I want to do this and have it legally recognised by banks etc I will need to change it by deed poll, as the marriage certificate only lets me change my surname, not my middle name.

Anyone with experience of the deed poll process?
Any recommendations of companies that are cheap/efficient to do the deed poll?
Are there any drawbacks to having a deed poll name change? ie is it a lot of hassle when you want to apply for passports or get a mortgage?

    Thanks!

I know it says up the top of this site that there’s no such thing as a silly question but I’ve got one!

A bit of a long story – I changed my surname by deed poll to my partner’s surname when we had our first child. Five years later we got married. Fifteen years later we got divorced. I've been single parent/-on my own ever since. I’m looking at using deed poll again to go back to my maiden name. It seems I can’t just revert back as my Decree Absolute does not show my maiden name as my former name. Still with me?

I don’t have a problem with doing this and nor do my children. They've grown up now and I only kept the name going for all this time for their sakes and for convenience. My daughter got married a couple of years ago and has got her husband’s name. My son’s 18 and at university.

Finally, and getting to the point:

I am currently Mrs Vyvyan Banana and going back to Miss Vyvyan Apple.

Or is it Ms Vyvyan Apple.

What do people normally do? Even although I know it’s probably my choice, I’d like to know what is usual and what have other people done?…. Any opinions please.

Thanks in advance. All names fictitious BTW!

    V xx

    :rotfl:

I've never used deed poll, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to make any kind of permanent decision about your title. A person's official name does not include a title, so your official name will be Vyvyan Apple, not Miss/Ms Vyvyan Apple. You can choose to use any title you want when filling in forms for bank accounts, driving licence etc. Personally, I always use the title Ms, because I don't see any reason to reveal marital status in my name. I usually have to battle with banks etc to get my title correctly put on their records though - personally I think we should just have one title (be it Mrs or Ms) to designate a female adult, just as we use Mr for all men.
  • Well my mum changed her name to her mother's maiden name by deed poll when she got married but is known as Mrs !

To be honest you can change it whatever you want to and as for the title I don't think it matters - what do you prefer?

Hi skeating86. Have a look here - I've been looking at this site:

    http://www.ukdps.co.uk/ServicesAndFees.html

has anyone any experience with this site?

Going to go with Ms Vyvyan Apple. Have decided to aim for the New Year as a target.
  • I used this site to sort out a deed poll - it's been accepted by everyone (passport, DVLA, etc) without question.:

  • The moral of the story it keep your name and if you marry and have children call them after your surname.

I was pressured into giving my DD her fathers second name(we never married)so I could get to pick her first name:rolleyes: (hours after giving birth)

I changed her second name as soon as she was two, after all he was not the one bringing her up.

    A little off topic sorry:A
  • Here in Spain everyone has two names (theit mother's and their father's) which they keep throughout life. The fathers' names are passed on to the choldren. So if Miss Lopez Ruiz marries Mr Gomez Rodriguez, their names stay the same and the children are known as Ruiz Rodriguez.

(I have known a guy called Rodrigo Rodriguez Rodriguez. Our Doctor's name is Gomez Gomez!).

A system like this cuts out all the necessity for name changing imho.

I don't like the idea mentioned above of the children just having the mother's name. They have a father too.

To the OP, Ms, Mrs - whatever you chose. Good luck!
