Changing Name By Deed Poll questions (merged)

As I understand it, regardless of how you change your name, your birth certificate remains the same - it is a legal document of your status at he time of your birth. I remember there being a case about transexuals (or possibly just one) wanting new birth certificates to reflect their change in gender and name, but as your birth certificate is just what it says on the tin, they were refused as this was not the case at the time of their birth.0

apparently not..... if you have a child before you get married and give the baby your surname (talking from a mothers point ) and then if you do decide to marry the father and he was there when the child was first registered you can change to the fathers name and also be given a new birth certificate regardless of the time limit in between0 -
I'm trying to make up my mind about what to do on a name change.
DH and I have agreed that for our wedding anniversary we are going to change both our names by deed poll so that we both have my surname as a middle name (before you all jump on me yes I know you don't HAVE to use deed poll for this but we want to be ultra sure of our legal position)
Question - I dont' use my first name all that much, I prefer a nickname which unfortunatly isn't a standard nickname for my name (if that makes sense)
It does however have the same first initial.
For example: if I was called Alison but preferred to be called Ann.
I don't want to get rid of my given names but should I add in the 'usename' as a middle name - that way if I ever get cheques etc for that name it would go through no problem. Or am I just making this more complex?DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

I changed my son's name by going to the solicitors and doing an official change of name. It cost £25, and I received several documents to send alongside his birth certificate. This was 8 years ago.
My mum changed her surname last year, using the same method, and it cost about the same.
So contact a solicitor and ask them.
I know how you feel, when I was pregnant with no.2, I was so hacked off with a divided family. At the time fathers of illegitimate children had no rights either. We opted for marriage (just before they doubled the costs) and we got married for £90. We told our families after, and just had our 2 year old and 2 witnesses.
As we felt slightly ridiculous, we opted not to have the whole 'lovey' bit and just had the straightforward ceremony. It took 3 mins!!!!
My sister had a budget wedding of £5000, ours cost £90 and I took the outfit back the next day!!!!:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -

The important part of getting married doesn't cost a lot. It's all the rest of the baloney that's expensive. Unfortunately, many people think that it's the baloney that really matters!!0 -
As others have said - Deed Poll.
Or if you live in Scotland you don't have to do anything. You can just start using his name as you are entitled to call yourself anything so long as it isn't for illegal reasons.0
