I have recently used this free deed poll to change my surname. It has been accepted by the passport office but I'm still waiting for my replacement driving license. I've spent (and am continuing to spend) far too much money on solicitor's fees to finalise my divorce so didn't want to spend any more changing my name.

also found this website which is actually very good as it lets your print out a pretty good certificate. Flaw is that it only allows 1 witness signature whereas on a Deed Poll is needs 2witnesses (when i checked with legal advice online)

I am suprised it was accepted by passport office. As the CLS advice is that 2 signatures of witness are required on a deed poll. Saying that the deedpoll service only provides room for 1 signature, so confusing!

Anyway I FINALLY changed my first name.....after months and months of thinking just though JFDI!!!! And I did. used the wording from the free one but added 2 witnesses. Just sent off for my replacement license...need to get passport photos done to renew that, plus letters to all the banks etc.

Most charge £30-40. No where near the amount you have posted.

There are a few sites that offer this service and yes you do not need to pay for one but i think most people do as they feel it's better coming from someone in the legal sector.

The information OP has provided is good.

Its a pity that he felt the need to pepper his post with indiscriminate vitriol against every member of the legal profession. A large percentage of solicitors are quietly involved in a certain amount of pro-bono (ie free) legal work, alongside their fee-paying work. Just because they don't shout about it - and most don't - doesn't mean it doesn't happen. There are good and bad in every profession and the law is no exception - but it isn't the den on thieves that OP would have us believe either.

I suppose I should declare an interest; I am a retired solicitor. I no longer do any paid legal work, but I still do a fair bit of pro-bono work as do a number of other retired colleagues.

    But I guess I'm biased :p

Why do your friends and family need to change their name so often?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

It was a bit strong, but you could have left the information in -that seemed quite useful!

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR NAME BY DEED POLL

Complete the form below, deleting the red italics and inserting your new and old names accordingly. Sign the document using black ink, with both your new signature AND your old signature, where indicated. You must do this even if your signature remains the same.

The person witnessing the name change must also sign the form in the space provided, using black ink. Note: the witness must actually witness you signing the Deed Poll in your old and new names.

The witness can be anyone over the age of 18 provided that s/he is not directly related to the person changing his or her name. The witness must also add his or her name, address, and occupation where indicated.
You will need several copies of the Deed Poll, and many organisations require a certified copy. Various professionals can certify copies for you, including solicitors, teachers, GP's. Make sure the wording is correct otherwise it will be rejected, if in doubt ask the organisation concerned for their preferred wording.

Once Deed Poll is completed it can be sent to the Passport Office, DVLA, and all companies and organisations, which hold your personal details, (Banks, Electricity/Gas/Water supplier, employer etc.); to provide evidence of your name change so that stored records can be changed to reflect the name change.

  • Hi,

I'm marrying my fiancee in a few weeks and plan to take her name. There seem to be dozens of companies offering deed poll services for varying prices. What's the law on this? Does one have more clout than another? Is it worth paying more for the "official" sites version?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dean

I don't understand why would you need to change it by deed poll?
Is it not the same as women and your marriage certificate is proof enough of name change?
forgive me if i'm being a bit dim.
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.
