Is this something the children want to happen or is it your choice?

I'm curious, why do Mums want to change their children's surnames?

My son had my maiden name and not his biological fathers name(and he hadn't seen him for years either), but when i got married and had his brother he asked to have the same surname as everyone else.

I used UK deed poll service on the internet. I can't remember how much it was as it was a few years ago, but I remember being very impressed with their service.

I'm not sure if there are 'proper' ones or dodgy ones, but mine was accepted by DVLA and the passport place.

I would use a solicitor, as it is not expensive and they can give you several certified copies should you need them. they will also know whether in your particular circumstances the father's consent is required.

  • Hi, just a quick query really. I'm looking at changing my surname and I've searched online to do this and it varies in price.
Some are £7.50 and some are £33. Whats the difference and what do you get? I have phoned some solicitors to get rpices but they are around £70/£80

    thanks!

It's worth doing a search on this forum about doing this as I'm sure it has been discussed before.

I seem to recall that you don't actually have to pay anything if you sort things yourself. Sorry can't really remember the details.
