Changing Name By Deed Poll questions (merged)

Hi,
You'll need to change your passport, and present your deed poll to the passport office when you do re-new/change the passport. Your old name doesn't show up on your new passport, but as other people have pointed out, you will need to declare your old name on any application forms etc. going forwards
You'll need a few copies of your deed poll to present to banks, building societies, and your work company to prove the change is 'legal', but once you've change your name in all the major areas of your life, you very rarely have to show the deed poll again. Your name will be on all different kinds of databases, particularly banks etc, as they need to link who your new name to your present name.0 -
I was just going to say, by the sounds of it you are trying to erase all knowledge of your previous name. This will not be the case as you always have to declare and provide your previous names on legal (and some every-day) documents. And there will always be a record of it.
I have only had to declare my previous name on doucuments for 6 years after I changed my name.
I decided not to record my new surmame with Deed Poll and just used a Deed of Name Change. On the Deed of Name Change, I renounced my old surname and stated I would just use my new surname and got my signature witnessed. I did it myself, so didn't have to pay a solicitor.
If you choose this route, my tip would be to make sure you print the Deed of Name Change on good quality paper as it is handled by everyone you need to tell and some of the organisations are quite careless (passport office were very professional though). All the organisiations I had to tell to change my name, wanted the original document and not a copy.RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

It is the official site of a private company called UK Deed Poll Service. There is no 'official site' for deed poll services. Please see http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/9805.htm.
Since these companies don't enroll the deed poll, you are purely paying over the odds for a fancy bit of paper that you can knock up on a word processor in 5 minutes.
Absolutely correct.
The website of the "UK Deed Poll Service" is misleading, as it may appear to some as an official UK government website. It isn't. It's nothing more than a private company making money from doing something that you can do yourself in 5 minutes.

I want to change my name, but I am unsure of the best way to do it, there seems to be a lot of companies on the net offering cheap deed poll services but are they genuine and legal. Has anyone done this and if so how? Reading on these websites it seems to be print off the form get someone to witness it and thats it...seems too simple. Any advice appreciatedLet's get ready to bumble! :rotfl:0

Your name might be Smith, but you have every right to pronounce it Jones.0

If you are in Scotland then there's no legal reason to have a name change done by deed poll.

However, if you really want to spend some money:

Hi Smeeinnit:D
Now you've had some OS input, I've moved this to the families board to see if anyone else has more experience of it.
Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
Thanks
