  • What happens if you need to contact VM for any reason (fault, incorrect bill, need to change the package, etc.) they always insist on speaking to the account holder. Also, what if you split up?

The official line is probably that the account holder needs to terminate the agreement and then open a new account in the name of the person still using it. That means negotiating a whole new deal, although you would get the new customer benefit. If the split is at all amicable, probably easiest to just let the contract run its course.

Helped a friend give full cancellation notice eight days ago, but despite having marketing accepted in her account, she's heard nothing since, apart from the box to return the equipment.
Do we need to start looking at other supplier options?

IME they call you within a day or so.
I always have an alternative in mind before giving notice, even if I don't really want to use them. Would be wise to see what is available. You can always cancel the cancellation, but I don't know what sort of deal they would then offer you.

Yes it’s best to look for alternatives, but 30% of the time virgin will be very clever and call you on last day of notice period to offer you a deal

Worth logging in and checking offers.

I normally do the cancel wait for call dance.
Not got to that stage just inbound retention who could offer current package for £80

    350MB BB
    TNT 360 max tv
    Phone with weekend calls

    Currently pay £49

    Logged in and offer was:

    350mb BB
    TNT sport but essentials tv
    Phone with weekend calls

I know its a downgrade on tv, but its £44.... it's only used for TNT anyway, having a look elsewhere its hard to get anything competitive including TNT sports so may just stick and save the hassle.

The Virgin Media website let me re-contract at my current price £15 for the cheapest broadband (which with Volt gives me M125). This is still subject to the inflation-busting price increases in April 2024 and April 2025 so by the end of the contract it will probably be looking more attractive to switch away.

On the phone the overseas retentions were all over the place offering me £41 and £25 for the same!
Where does The Virgin Media website let you re-contract?

Login to your My Virgin Media account then click the 'Find out more' button underneath 'Upgrade package - Upgrade your package or check out our latest deals for you.'

It's potentially mis-leading but that's for adjusting your current contract, not for renewing/extending it.

Well that's exactly what I have done.
My current contract was due to expire in Jan24.
one of my discounts was set to expire Oct23.

I just stumbled on the option to renew my contract at the current rate of £20.
bearing in mind I have had several emails offering me to renew at £24.
I was more than happy with the £20 option for a further 18 months.

**Email to confirm me contract received earlier tonight as well

Prepare yourself for some disappointment to come then.

I'm not sure what you mean.
but I've been with Virginmedia a hell of a long time.
usually play the I'm leaving card for a good/cheap deal, which always works.

as for my current deal, I have had the contract and my first bill is exactly the price I paid before and the new price i renewed at £20.

You must be one of the lucky ones! What do you get for £20 a month?

There's been a few threads on the VM Community forums recently about VM not honouring contract renewals so this is why I suggested you should "prepare yourself for disappointment". If you're sure you are paying the same now that you're on your new contract then maybe you're safe.
I've been a VM customer for over 10 years. My current contract (M250+landline for £20 a month) ends next week so I threatened to leave but the best deal they could offer was £35 a month for an 18 month contract. As the "full price" of the M250+landline is something like £65 a month it's likely I'd be paying maybe £50+ a month by the end of the contract (due to the April price rises).
I asked the VM Retention team about the "online renewal" (as mentioned earlier in the thread) but they said that this was only for adding or removing services from existing contracts and not for setting up a new one.
If you've managed to renew your contract at the same price you were paying for your old one then that's good news for you but I'm guessing you're an exception as most customers end up having to contact the Retention Team and haggle (otherwise there's no point in VM employing them).

My Virgin Media 1GB connection got replaced by Vodafone Full Fibre 900 around lunchtime. Vodafone is costing me £33 per month (with Together i.e. if you also have mobile else it's £38 p/m). Virgin retentions wanted £45 a few weeks ago but I said I would think about it. When I called them last week, they wanted £58! Funny thing is Virgin claimed to give 1.1GB but I never got more than 6-700 on v.good days and at peak it dropped down to 3-400. Currently getting 890 with Vodafone.. Yay!
