Call them, after Nov 5, on 150 from your Virgin line and go through to the "thinking of leaving" option. Tell them you want M125 and call weekends only ( or whatever they call it now). Should be well below £30. See what they say and tell them it's still too expensive and you want to leave. Give your notice.
You should then get a call from retentions within a day or so, with a better offer.  :)

Thank you. I wonder if they offer M50 broadband. I can't see it on any of the deals for new customers but can't thnk why it wouldn't be an option. It would maybe be ok for me and cheaper than M125

Maybe they don't bother promoting that one, as most people can get similar speeds through other providers at a low cost and Virgin can't compete.

"The M50 package is usually only available as a broadband-only option or as part of a bundle with TV. It is not usually available only with a phone line.Strangely – and frustratingly – Virgin charges more for its broadband-only options than it does for its broadband and phone packages, which makes M50 a rather unnecessarily expensive way to get the entry-level package, unless you want to pay for the TV package as well, in the form of Virgin’s Big Bundle"

Just seen this for new customers for virgin:

    M125-- £26.5 pm

M250 £30.50 pm (the one I have now)

Using it as a guide, it doesn't look like a slower internet speed saves much money.

The Virgin Media website let me re-contract at my current price £15 for the cheapest broadband (which with Volt gives me M125). This is still subject to the inflation-busting price increases in April 2024 and April 2025 so by the end of the contract it will probably be looking more attractive to switch away.

On the phone the overseas retentions were all over the place offering me £41 and £25 for the same!
Where does The Virgin Media website let you re-contract?

Login to your My Virgin Media account then click the 'Find out more' button underneath 'Upgrade package - Upgrade your package or check out our latest deals for you.'

It's potentially mis-leading but that's for adjusting your current contract, not for renewing/extending it.

Well that's exactly what I have done.
My current contract was due to expire in Jan24.
one of my discounts was set to expire Oct23.

I just stumbled on the option to renew my contract at the current rate of £20.
bearing in mind I have had several emails offering me to renew at £24.
I was more than happy with the £20 option for a further 18 months.

**Email to confirm me contract received earlier tonight as well

Prepare yourself for some disappointment to come then.

Does anyone know what number Retentions are presenting when they call back these days. A friend cancelled yesterday and this morning missed a call from 0345 454 1111.
I've never known them present their main customer service number before.

It's always been a mobile number for me the last few years - but maybe that was staff who WFH

I'm on M250 & talk weekends, £25/month with contract ending next Feb. Got an email from them today saying if I'm happy, just click to renew "for just a little extra". Which translates to £30/month.

Er no thanks, especially as when I started this contract it was only £18, and the 2 annual rises have already hiked it nearly 40%. Bad enough that it's already getting throttled pretty much every evening.

I think l'll wait till January, cancel and play the retentions game as usual.

Who on earth is suckered in by carp like this??

Enough people to make it a profitable business model.

  • Hey!
Just joined to pass on my success story and I hope it works for you all too!

My virgin contract was up end of November, and I wanted to cancel my package to move on to solely a Broadband only deal. I got through to the retentions team and they couldn't match the price i was paying (£45), instead insisting that my new price is more! Annoyed that they couldn't match or even get close to a new customer deal, I proceeded to disconnect my service.

I then spoke with the sales team and signed up as my partner to claim a new offer deal (18 months £32.00) with double the broadband speed I currently have!

In short, if you live with someone in your household, don't bother with negotiating a better deal. Just disconnect and sign up as your partner to claim a new customer deal. Then in 18 months, you're free to sign back up again and you'll be classed as a new customer.

A bit more context would be useful.

Did you use the same surname or bank details when you signed up as a new customer?
How did you handle the disconnection/connection dates and was there any down time?

    Cheers
