Cat knocked over multiple fractures on pelvis

My 10 month old cat Dave got knocked over at some point in the early hours.

We have taken him to the vets who initially thought it was a broken spine and gently suggested pts.
Husband asked for xrays to confirm this before we made that decision.

Thankfully his spine is ok, BUT as the title says multiple fractures on pelvis, most on the lower non weight bearing side, but the top (wing) is pushing out, putting pressure on his bladder, they did the toes test and no reaction so we don't know if the nerves have been affected yet.

Fortunately we live very close to Langford and so he was referred there and we transferred him there this afternoon.

The vet seemed hopeful that surgery will be successful, BUT again this is all down to his ability to pee and poop.

He was due a CT scan this weekend, and again he will have 24/7 care and the operation on Monday, unless it get further critical then they can do it this weekend.

Anyone had to go through this, I know that if all is well he could be home maybe midweek and needs to be crated for 5 -6 weeks said the vet.

I am so sorry your lovely boy has been in the wars!

I cannot give you any specific advice relating to his pelvic injury but I do understand how you feel. Some 23 years ago my lovely ginger lad, who was 2 at the time, came off worst in an argument with a car. He lost a back leg and broke his jaw in two places. It was touch and go for a while but he pulled through and lived to the grand age of 19. I do hope your Dave has a similar outcome.

So Just spoken to the vet looking after Dave this evening. He has settled in well, his bladder is filling but not peeing just yet. bum is not numb so hopefully nerve damage isn't bad, and he has moved his back legs, he doesn't like to but he can move them. and he is moving his tail. will have ct scan possibly tomorrow ready for surgery Monday, still not out of the woods but its a good sign right?

Sounding a lot better than it could have been at this point, Mupette. Too early to say for sure, but it's not as final as the vet's initial thoughts implied.

Thanks Jojo, the vet will ring again in the morning.

And we hope to go visit Sunday that's the earliest we can go. prefer to be camped outside there, but 2 other cats and a dog here too that need mum

we all miss him, i'm having an MS relapse so this is really not a great time, couldn't give two hoots about me i just want my baby better and home

This happened to our last cat, he needed his bladder expressing for around three months and was left with limited feeling in his bottom and required a small daily dose of lactulose, apart from that he was just fine healed and backed to his normal self.

The vet did say last night about his bum and that he had sensation which i hope is good, he has been moving his tail and his legs although protesting at the leg moving, he is at that age that when you pick him up he has a half hearted grumble but doesn't fight you, just snuggles in (ohh i wish i could be doing the snuggling now)

My cat had a fractured pelvis last year. Her bladder worked after a couple of days but it took days and days for her bowels to move. She spent eight weeks in the crate IIRC. She's fine now, but there is a teeny little bit of residual weakness in her back legs.

Wishing your little guy all the best.

I got a large crate (one big enough for a large dog). As my little cat recovered, one of the other cats would snuggle up inside with her for company, which helped.

We also left the crate in situ long after she had recovered because all the cats loved it .
