Thomas Mair has just appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court. He was asked for his name and replied: 'Death to traitors....freedom for Britain'!0

Money money money. The world revolves around money. Success is measured in how much one if worth compared to everyone else. Sad state of affairs.0 -

I agree that money is just a tool, it's Thrug that seems to have an issue with it.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

You have to decide for yourself how you measure success, financial success is very relevant and important, but it is by no means the whole story, it is only part of it.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
1. I don't believe the EU is undemocratic as it is really a collection of the decisions of the democratic countries that are members of the EU. It's pretty hard for some Eurocrat to run off and start making serious decisions that impact on people's day-to-day lives. In fact I believe the Standing Orders put into most UK legislation are far more undemocratic than the EU.
I'm in the remain camp, though that vote will not be an endorsement of the EU. Rather a begrudging acceptance that leaving will be chaotic, and the end point will be the UK broadly accepting most the terms of EU membership to get trade agreements. The EU will not want other nations to go it alone, it will make things as awkward for the UK as possible.
The EU is very undemocratic in my view. The only body elected by the people is the Parliament, and it's only function is rubber stamping. Although people choose whether to vote, it's also less democratic in the sense that fewer people participate in the selection of MEPs than MPs.
The body responsible for drafting legislation is the Commission. Which contains a single appointed commissioner from each member state. Even if that member state has a lower population than Manchester. You might argue that an elected PM has selected the commissioner, but it's still one person selecting one person to represent over 60 million.
Personally, I'd like to see the commission abandoned, and the ability to draft legislation given to a smaller parliament. It would be helpful as well if people elected MEPs on the same day as the general election, which might improve participation."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0 -

Just an observation of how the world has changed. Over recent decades. Money is far too often viewed as status over achievement. In business I find people more aggressive and ruder on the whole. While actually being dumber as far less street wise.
I know a number of people who have turned their backs on their highly successful careers to pursue more satisfying simpler lives. Where giving something back is deemed more rewarding than building money empires.0 -

Money to me means financial freedom, not status (apart from very close friends, no one knows about our wealth), for example our current car is a 9 year old Zafira (the one before that was a 10 year old mondeo), which I bought 8 years ago, we might buy another car next year, but that is dependent upon getting a caravan and towing capacities, nothing at all to do with having a nicer car.
The pay for lecturing is far less than I could earn as a chartered quantity surveyor, I have had no interest at all in working as a QS since I left that about 16 years ago, at that point I started doing voluntary work for dog rescue centres (only minimal part time though).Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

That's true, but I think what Thrug was saying was that people measure others by their wealth (and therefore financial status), and less by other criteria.
I'm most interested (and impressed) by people who achieve great things in, say, archaeology, science or anything else that requires deep knowledge, and that helps us to understand the world and perhaps make it a better place.
Don't mind money, though.0
