I think you and your husband have been more than generous both in terms of finances and time to your in laws who sound as if they have been living beyond their means for some time. You need to think of your own family and make it clear that you are done bailing them out and they need to sort their own finances out in future. If they can't afford to live in a cottage in the country which sounds as if it needs a lot of work they can downsize.

MSE friends you're a great help - you've assured me I'm not being daft. Thank you all.

OH has taken a day off work today and is currently attempting to mend said boiler.............
I would suggest you point them in the direction of boiler cover (British Gas or otherwise) and let them deal with it......but not with you paying the monthly premiums for them.

You are the easy option. You need to stop being the easy option.

  • You need to put some distance between you and your inlaws. The more you keep giving the more they will take.

  • Just checked my post history to make sure I'm not going mad (this is not a new problem!) and no, not posted anything like this before..............

At least I'm clearly not the only one in this position!
  • You didnt say wether its a gas boiler or if your OH is gas safe registered?
If things go wrong his parents could be poisoned and he could be looking at the police from the wrong side of a desk.
Lets hope non of those things apply or happen.

It's not really relevant to the discussion. In any case you only need to be Gas Safe registered if you are being paid for the work - and this certainly isn't the case here! He should be 'competent' however - how you measure that I'm not sure.
  • To be honest if you look at the subject matter of the original posting then it kinda is relevant.
If anything happened to the parents through negligence of the gas then i'm afraid it could be called a motive!
