Just to add my experience of Iresa. I applied to switch my own electric supply and also my mum and dads' electric supply. Both completed in November 2016.

My account is fine, in that when I input my readings, the account is updated to show my balance. My mum and dad's however has not went as well. Their meter readings do not update and when I contacted Iresa, they say the reading are awaiting validation. Not sure why it is taking 2 months for this to happen.

They are paying interest on the credit balance but I would rather just know what the true balance is, as at the minute it just shows a large credit due to the payments being credited and no usage being recorded.

Hope that helps someone considering switching.

Looks like this is a common issue, as exactly the same thing is happening to me. I sent a message to them about this through my online account on Friday 13th Jan, and so far have had absolutely nothing back. I'm not going to chase just yet, as it will be quite interesting to see how long it takes them to reply!

I've got a note of all my readings and worked out the cost of the monthly bills so know I'm not going to be landed with a big unexpected bill when they do update, but that's not necessarily going to be the case for all their customers...

Regarding interest, I've had two "bills" generated with no elec charges on them, the first had 18p credit interest, but there was nothing on the second. Interesting to see how this works out, as there should always be some interest if the monthly payment is about right, as you pay a month in advance.

It says they don't support smart meters, does this mean I will just have to submit readings manually?

Yes it does. The first one on the day your supply starts with them and then on the last day of every month so the monthly bill can be prepared accurately.

It is extremely unlikely if you switched to A N Other supplier that your existing smart meter would communicate with the new supplier.

What? That's not smart at all; guessing that's due to crap initial firmwares and that there is a plan to fix this in the future!?

There are several threads on here about smart meters. Basically the current standard is SMETS1 (smart metering equipment technical specification) which are not transferable between suppliers and may or may not be upgradeable to the new fully interoperable SMETS2 standard which may (or may not) commence to be installed sometime in the next year or 2.

This decision sits firmly at the feet of Government. The Foundation Stage, as it is known, was to allow energy suppliers to set up their IT systems etc to cope with smart meter data. Time was also needed to confirm the final smart meter specification and set up The Data Communications Company. The latter has just gone live in England. Existing meters may be suitable for an upgrade but it is slightly more than just sending out a firmware upgrade. And, yes, we are all paying for this in the form of higher energy bills.

  • We've just signed up to Iresa electric only, currently on E-on Energy Fixed 1 Year Version 19, due to start on 22 Feb. I'll post if I have any issues or problems.
