Good point, I have full faith in them correcting the issue. Sorry wasn't meant to imply fraud more an oversight maybe in setup as it might have been missed and not fully accounted for in their prices when calculated.
When you calculate the kwh is it only the calorific value that changes or the multiplier? Just getting my head around the maths but it does look like I would be in the same boat although my usage is probably at the low end of the scale.
I looked on here to try and see what mine should be:

How often do the suppliers update as the bills show it for a large number of days, so do they take an average of the daily measurement over a period?

My understanding is that it should be an average for the period covered by the bill.

Simple maths as you suggest. Take a billing period, say, Jan 17. Add up all the daily CV values and divide by 31, and use the average value to the nearest one decimal point. (roundup or round down is the question?)

Neither roundup or round down. The value should be truncated is the answer. (see below from the guidance to suppliers)
    Use of average daily figures

Regulation 3 (2) states that the “average calorific value of gas so conveyed during any such period shall be calculated by adding the daily values…for each gas day in that gas period and dividing by the sum of the number of those gas days…”.

National Grid is responsible for determining the daily average CV for each charging area. National Grid publishes this daily average CV for each charging area rounded to one decimal place in accordance with Regulation 4 (4) (set out in Appendix 1). National Grid then transmits this daily calorific value electronically to gas transporters and gas suppliers for their respective uses.

The daily CV provided to gas suppliers by National Grid should be the basis for calculating the average CV for any gas period.

The CV used for consumer billing should be an average of the daily average values received from National Grid for the billing period. The use of a fixed CV, which some suppliers refer to as an ‘industry standard’, is not consistent with the Regulations.

    Requirement to truncate

Regulation 3 (2) is clear that when calculating CV “any amount of less than 0.1 megajoules per cubic metre shall be ignored.”

This means that for a given gas billing period, suppliers should truncate the average CV to one decimal place. Rounding average CV is not consistent with the Regulations, nor is calculating to more than one decimal place.

Hmm, regardless of the words the regulator uses, that effectively means rounding down every time. Nice for us consumers I guess!

I wonder how long it will be before a supplier wants to introduce a smart gas meter tariff that just charges the National grid figure for that days consumption.

Not the kind of bill you'd want in paper form!

Just to add my experience of Iresa. I applied to switch my own electric supply and also my mum and dads' electric supply. Both completed in November 2016.

My account is fine, in that when I input my readings, the account is updated to show my balance. My mum and dad's however has not went as well. Their meter readings do not update and when I contacted Iresa, they say the reading are awaiting validation. Not sure why it is taking 2 months for this to happen.

They are paying interest on the credit balance but I would rather just know what the true balance is, as at the minute it just shows a large credit due to the payments being credited and no usage being recorded.

Hope that helps someone considering switching.

So far so good. E.on v19 finishes end of Jan. 14 day cooling off for Iresa ended Tuesday. Had email through on the day to confirm ddr amount and date which I knew. DDR went out today as scheduled. Supply due to switch Feb 1st or thereabouts. Not had to phone or email. Account is set up on their www and I have access to it. Not bothered about CV - now it is pointed out it will be sorted I'm sure, but they are so much cheaper, I am going to go with it, and see what happens. As I say so far so good.

Iresa is back on MSE CEC as a Top Pick, but ZOG has disappeared. That said, ZOG is still giving online quotes. No wonder people are finding comparisons difficult.

Same here. I went for Iresa just for electric but it's not showing up at all on here for electric only just dual fuel.
  • Try a different switching site, The CAB site shows (for me) Iresa as electric only https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/
