Thanks all. An update. Guest is now here and is lovely, has no issues with the house rules (is a non-smoker and meals provided at conference anyway). I was intending last night after she arrived home to provide her with a key as I felt comfortable with her and she seems responsible. However, held off on the key as I had a migraine so just let her in and went straight to bed. Awoke at 3am to the howls of one of my cats whom the guest had inadvertently locked in the toilet some six or so hours previously. Tiny room so nowhere to hide. Genuine mistake I'm 100% sure. However, panicked cat, blocked toilet (toilet rolls knocked into open toilet by cat in a panic) and soiled toilet floor (from cat), makes me glad I'll be around when the guest is there. She has no experience of cats so it's not her fault, but for their safety it's best that she's not left on her own with them. The dog and her have a mutual love going on; house on fire :)

Currently the guest appears to be unaware of the restrictions they will be under apart from the vegetarian aspect. It would seem to be sensible to provide all the rules to the guest up front so they are aware that if they stay at the OP's house they will be under an 11pm curfew, won't be provided a key and will only be allowed in the house when the OP is there.

Guest was made completely aware in written form (by colleague) before she arrived and is happy to abide by them. Don't think the rules are stringent. No smoking, no meat, hardly prison. As for 'curfew', what a strange word. Student isn't an undergrad who is here for benders; it's a working trip and like most scientists acts and is expected to act in a professional manner as she is representing her uni and country.

    Assume that's a typo!

Why? I understood perfectly what OP meant. (The student is not here for benders ... whereas some people might have the impression that is why they came on the trip).

Don't worry, house isn't on fire :) They (visitor and dog) are getting on like a house on fire, i.e. they're hitting it off. She's a dog person and he's an attention tart :D

It's weird that you have expectations of her professional behaviour.

Unless I am mistaken you have nothing to do with the conference she is attending so although she should act professionally at the conference (if she doesn't want to its none of your business) I don't think she would be expected to act in a professional manner 24/7 for the whole of the trip (like you seem to think she should).

It seems like you think you're this girls mother!

As she is living for free in the OP's house, why wouldn't she be expected to behave well rather than getting roaring drunk or behaving in other objectionable ways?
