This might be of interest to anyone using Octopus for gas:
I don't know how many gas customers Octopus has, but presumably it is a small fraction of its total ~3m customers, many of whom won't sign up. So the odds of winning and share of the final pot everyone who hits their target gets might be worth the effort of signing up! Shame I don't have a gas supply.
I'm curious. What 'historical data' will be used to calculate the 'annual quantity' on which the personal reduction target will be based?
As per the T&C (my emphasis): "Entrants will have a Personal Target calculated for them by Octopus Energy, based on their “annual quantity” (or AQ) of gas as outlined in Uniform Network Code H3.2.1 (the “Personal Target”). The AQ is calculated by Xoserve and will be based on historical data, recorded before the start of the qualifying period."
You can find some information from Xoserve about how the AQ is calculated here and here.
Thanks for the links masonic. Must admit, I'm not really any wiser. I was trying to establish whether the 'historical data' would be based on the previous use in a specific property. If it is, then there's no chance of us reducing our usage below that 'historical data' since previous owners hardly ever had the CH heating on.
The target I was given is way below last years usage. I keep a speadsheet of consumption so I can check. I have queried their estimate. If nothing changes I won't take part as to get usage to their figure I would probably have hyothermia. I already wear multiple layers to keep warm and my useage is below an average household.

I've done the same and pointed out to them that their target would endanger my health.  With a relatively mild winter I'd have to effectively switch the heating off for the equivalent of 2 weeks over their target period.

It's obviously based on my last annual usage and the usage profile in their links, which doesn't really match mine which is higher use in Nov-March, with a bit in late October and the first half of April depending on the weather and very little in the rest of April to October.

Based on my records it's around 20% lower than what I used in the same period in 2019 and 30% lower than last year when we  had some cold snaps.    If they don't adjust to a sensible target I'll ignore as my heating is already at the level to keep me warm and manage the needs of the house in avoiding condensation problems.
  • My prediction seemed Very low.
last years Avro figure would have been more accurate .
Anyhow I worked out my daily figure and it was  1 day 2/12/21 i used  54Kwh  (high usage day)
Octopus prediction 3920 Kwh  divide by 84 days = 46.6 Kwh per day......MMMM. Impossible target.
Going to try some boiler tweaks Tweak all the radiators etc and try to get gas usage down a little.
After a few boiler tweaks (have not finished yet). Usage yesterday 39.9 Kwh......House still nice and warm.
So i signed up for the 5% saving. Might hit it Might not I dont really care.Being warm is more important .
One thing to watch out for I inserted a meter reading into what i thought was going into the "Winter Work Out" and it paid my gas bill 19 days early . Should have been made clear thanks Octopus for making me mess up my billing.

Octopus bill you after every meter reading. It's a feature not a bug, although I can understand how it might mess up your own records.

My "deal" ends at the end of January
What is the current standard default price for gas and electric from Octopus?

Will be interesting to see what reply we get. If they don't raise the target, I will not participate. Having read their tips on saving gas I have been doing all this for years to keep costs down. I already wear multiple layers of clothing to keep warm Use heated throws to turn heating off. When I looked at average house usage in UK my own consumption was described as low. Much lower would harm my heatlth.

I echo what has been said, my target to beat is around 2.3 units a week during what is usually some of the coldest weeks of the year

Seems like the only people who will get a share of the incentive are those who are going to be away from home or those willing to switch to other fuels (at higher cost).
