Are there any ttc'ers out there who are overweight?
I am about 2 stone overweight but myself and OH have been trying to eat more healthy and do more exercise (we go swimming 3 times a week). I was just wondering if anyone lost weight and conceived straight away? Is it a major deal? I know if you are overweight it can cause problems in pregnancy like high blood pressure but does anyone know of or have any proof that it can effect conceiving? Also what kind of things do you eat? I know it sounds like a silly question.... but is there any special foods that aid fertility?
Miss Pink x
I am very definately over weight. I have been advised to lose weight by many professionals who I have seen about my fertility. Apparently if you need help they won't help you until your BMI is within their acceptable limits.
Having said that I have conceived twice now without losing weight so I know it can be done. I have just ordered myself some tablets to help with weight loss as even though I know I can conceive being the weight I am I also know that losing some won't hurt at all.
Oh and thanks miss pink for pre seed advice, have just ordered some:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

Once pregnant, if you are quite overweight-it can be dificult to do scans/get a good image of the baby inside you.
As for ttc-i reckon being overweight doesnt help, but plenty still get pregnant/ Personally i'd try and loose a bit if possible before. I managed to loose about 10 pounds-not sure if it helped but i felt betterMommy to Elliot (5) and Lewis (born xmas eve 11!)0 -
keelykat & shelly...thanks for the advice. I think I will try harder to lose the extra wobbles. Every little helps I suppose. Shelly..I have pm'ed you for some advice

Okay guys. I really need some help and perspective - I'm going round the twist!!!:o
My AF is due Sunday by my calculations and I am slowly convincing myself that i might be pg. I have had really really sore b**bs (mainly Ni**les) and they are a bit darker in colour than usual. I have also had light cramps, increased discharge and feel like a truck has hit my I am achey and knackered! I don't get this during my cycle normallyI have a niggling feeling as well (but could have invented this)
Anyway - I did a test (silly really as not due till sunday which is 6 days away!) and of course it was BFN. I figure that I can test on Wed and see how that goes....
But it's so hard. I don't know whether to talk to DH about it or whether to hold off until I know definately one way or the other, but I'm going insane keeping it all in my own head.
Any advice gratefully recieved - or just even someone to say I'm not alone...0 -
Hi startingttc,
I had no symptoms whatsoever til about 5 weeks pg. Everyone is different though. I had my BFP about 4 days before I was due on but the line was very faint.
Good luck.0 -

Hi miss pink
i'm probably about the same as you (if not a little more) Me and OH have been trying to be good - we try and cycle to work (about 8 miles each way) which is starting to shift some weight but it's not easy to stay motivated when you've had a rough day and the takeaway/chocolate/ice cream (delete as appropriate) is calling!
I know that they say it doesn't help, and i suppose that being overweight is already putting a strain on your body, but i would try not to stress about it - as that certainly wont help ttc! just try to eat healthy and get regular exercise!
Also if you look a few pages back someone has kindly listed some good foods to be eating while ttc - thanks again!0 -

Hi ttc - try to stay calm about it is the best advice I can give you - it hurts so much worse to have your BFN if you got wound up before hand. You'll know best how to deal with your OH, I usually try not to say too much to mine unless he's asked, as I suffer so much when I get myself excited that I try not to inflict that on him too.
Good luck with it, plenty of people "just know" when they're pregnant, and very few tests would pick it up that far before your period, so it's very possible you'll be pg. On the negative side though, plenty of people accidently create symptoms for themselves just by looking for them as soon as they start trying.... You know your cycle best of all, so keep waiting another couple of days, test again if you still haven't come on and keep your fingers crossed!Am not witty enough to put something cool and informative here:o0 -
And here we go again for anyone new, I know how time consuming it can be to read threads through from the start...
2ww = 2 week wait (between ov and af)
AF = Aunt Flo (Period)
BBT = Basal Body Temperature
BD = "baby dancing"
BFN = Big Fat Negative
BFP = Big Fat Positive (pregnancy test)
CD = cycle day (1st day of AF is the start of a new cycle and is CD1)
CM = Cervical Mucus
CP = Cervical Position (high means ovulation is imminent)
DPO = days past ovulation
EWCM = Egg White Cervical Mucus (The consistency that will stetch between your fingers - ew!)
FSH = follicle stimulating hormone (starts building up during AF to cause follicles to grow on the ovaries and develop eggs)
HPT = home pregnancy test
LH = luteinising hormone (causes the ripest egg to burst out of the follicle - it is a surge in this hormone that ovulation predictors look for, as LH peaks about 12-18hrs before ov)
LP = luteal phase
m/c = miscarriage = loss of a baby in the 1st or 2nd trimester of pg
OPK = ovulation predictor kit
ov = ovulation - the moment the egg (ovum) is released
pg = pregnant
POAS = pee on a stick
tcoyf = "Taking Charge Of Your Fertility", a book by Toni Weschler that's generally considered to be the "TTC Bible". In it, she describes how to track your fertility by temp'ing, checking for EWCM and Cervical Position. See http://www.ovusoft.com/
TTC = Trying to conceive

Wondered about all this talk about trying to conceive and ovulation etc. That's ok but what if the difficulties lie with the man? We have been trying for a baby for over two years with me coming off the pill a year prior to that. I used the temperature method and calculated my ovulation dates etc. Now after tests we have discovered that my husband has plenty of sperm but most are abnormal and there is a very slim chance that I would get pregnant naturally. Time is running out because we are only entitled to a free IVF cycle on the NHS up until I'm 40 (in Oct). adding insult to injury we paid £48 for a blood test last week to determine if I have good enough eggs for the process. Other costs could include storage of sperm etc. NHS criteria is alos very strict ie no living children,stable heterosexual relationship and committed to raising a child! What a lot of judgement. Tempted to go out and get drunk and have a one night stand (only joking!) Just a bit bitter cos just because we can't conceive naturally we have to somehow be subjected to 'strict criteria'.Anyway suppose I wouldn't want NHS wasting money so need to accept this. Would love to hear from anyone going through the process cos it sounds horrendous what with supression of hormones (similar to the menopause) and lots of invasive procedures etc.0

Hi MissPink
I was very overweight when I conceived and DH was slightly over too but somehow we managed to get pregnant the first month of ttc. I was also 33 at the time so obviously not the textbook ideal.
The sonographer at my 20 week scan said it was more difficult to see the baby due to my 'maternal characteristics' :rolleyes: but babe was just fine (apart from she couldn't sex the baby so we paid for a 4D scan to find out).
As I was a higher risk I had to have a glucose tolerence test as apparently larger ladies are more likely to get gestational diabetes. Luckily I got the all clear. My BP at the start of my preg was on the higher end of the acceptable scale so I was always more closely monitored. I actually liked all the extra appointments as I got to hear my babe's heartbeat so many more times than other ladies and it was a lovely reassurance. My BP was too high on 2 occasions and I had protein in my wee so I was sent off to be monitored as a precaution for pre eclampsia but thankfully all was ok.
I eventually gave birth to a 8lb 11oz daugther and my skinny SIL had a 9 pounder!
Good luck to everyone! (and to me too as we are ttc again).
